Fit a coat rack to a metal stud wall

Fit a coat rack securely to a metal stud wall, with the right fixings if your wall turns out to be brick, timber stud, dot-and-dab or lath and plaster.

CR-01Gather your tools and materialsLay everything out before you start: a coat rack kit, stud detector, spirit level, pencil, drill, and a mix of drill bits and fixings, since you won't know the exact fixing you need until you've checked the wall. Put a dust sheet down and clear the area. This job takes about an hour from start to finish.

CR-02Work out what your wall is actually made ofRun the stud detector or a magnet along the wall — a line of small dots or screw heads every 400mm or 600mm tells you where a stud wall's frame is. Tap the wall: a dull thud is brick or block, a hollow drum sound between marks is a stud wall (timber or metal), and dot-and-dab plasterboard sounds hollow near the edges but solid where the adhesive dabs sit behind it. Drill one small 2mm pilot hole at a mark and look at what comes out — pale wood dust means a timber stud, fine grey metal swarf means a metal stud (very common in flats, new builds, and anything refitted since the 1990s). Lath and plaster feels bouncy and slightly springy underhand, with faint horizontal ridges under the plaster where the laths run.
CR-03Mark and level your fixing lineHold the coat rack (or its mounting batten) against the wall at coat-hanging height — around 1500-1600mm from the floor — and mark the top edge lightly in pencil. Use the spirit level to draw a true horizontal line across the full width. If you're fixing into studs, mark the stud centres you found in step 2 along this line so you know exactly where to drill.
CR-04Check for pipes and cables before you drillCables and pipes can run almost anywhere in a wall, not just in the obvious 'safe zones' — and metal stud frames confuse cheap detectors, so treat any reading with caution. Sweep the whole fixing line with your detector, but still assume something could be there and drill carefully at first, checking depth as you go. Before you start, find your stopcock (usually under the kitchen sink) and check it turns freely, so you can shut the water off fast if you nick a pipe. If you have any doubt at all, isolate the relevant circuit at the consumer unit before drilling.
CR-05Drill and fit the right fixing for your wallFor a metal stud: never use a plain wall plug or an ordinary wood screw, both strip straight through 0.5mm steel. Drill a small pilot hole and use a self-drilling metal-stud screw where you've hit a stud, or a spring toggle/hollow-wall anchor rated for the load if you're fixing into the plasterboard between studs. For timber studs, drill a 2mm pilot hole into the centre of the stud and drive a 40mm wood screw straight in, no plug needed. For solid brick or block, drill a 6mm hole to the plug's depth and fit a plug before screwing. For dot-and-dab, check the void behind the board first (usually 30-50mm) and use a fixing long enough to bite into the masonry behind, not just the plasterboard. For lath and plaster, drill slowly through the plaster and lath into the timber behind — it crumbles easily, so go steady and expect to patch small chips afterwards.

CR-06Fit a mounting batten if you're spanning between studsIf your coat rack's fixing points don't land on studs, screw a timber batten (about 32mm x 25mm) horizontally along your marked line first, fixed into every stud it crosses. This spreads the load across the wall instead of relying on the plasterboard alone, and matters most on metal stud walls where the board fixings can't take much pull-out force. Skip this step if your rack's screw holes already line up with stud centres.

CR-07Attach the coat rack to the wallHold the rack (or hang it on the fitted batten) and drive the screws home through its fixing holes into your chosen fixings. Don't overtighten toggle fixings — stop as soon as they're snug, over-tightening can crush the plasterboard around them. Check the rack sits level once fixed.
CR-08Test the fixing before you trust it with coatsHang a bag with a few kilos of weight on each hook and leave it for a few minutes, checking for any movement, creaking, or the fixing pulling forward from the wall. Remember a metal stud fixing on its own won't hold much pull-away force — if it's straining or shifting, add a noggin behind the board or fix through to the masonry instead. Only load it up properly once you're confident it's solid.
CR-09Tidy upVacuum up plaster dust, wood dust, or metal swarf from drilling — swarf in particular can leave rust marks on carpet if left. Wipe down the wall around the fixing and fold away your dust sheet. Rub out any pencil lines still visible.
