Fit a wall-mounted bike rack to a metal stud wall

Fit a secure wall-mounted bike rack by identifying your wall type first and using the right fixing for it.

BK-01Prepare the area and gather your toolsClear the floor and move anything nearby, this stops scratches and trips. Lay a dust sheet under the wall you're working on. Get the bike rack's fitting instructions out and check the hole spacing matches what's in this guide. Gather a drill, spirit level, tape measure, pencil, screwdriver, and the drill bits and screws for your wall type.

BK-02Mark the fixing points using the rack as a templateDecide on a height that gives clearance for the wheels and handlebars - most racks sit with the fixing at around 1500-1700mm from the floor. Hold the rack against the wall, level it with a spirit level, then mark through each fixing hole with a pencil. Double-check the marks are level and correctly spaced before you drill anything.

BK-03Work out what your wall is made ofTap the wall between your marks - a dull thud usually means solid brick or block, a hollow sound means a stud wall or dot-and-dab. Run a magnet or stud detector across the marks; a line of screw heads roughly every 400-600mm behind plasterboard means timber or metal studs. Drill a 3mm pilot hole at one mark and check what comes out: brick dust means masonry, pale wood dust means a timber stud, fine grey metal filings mean a metal stud, and a short scrape into a gap after only 10-15mm means dot-and-dab. Soft, crumbly plaster over thin wooden strips with gaps between them means lath and plaster - go gently, it's fragile.

BK-04Check for hidden pipes and cables before you drillCables and pipes can run almost anywhere in a wall, not just the usual safe zones, so use a detector - then still assume something's there until you've proved otherwise. Cheap detectors can miss cables that are deep, in metal conduit, behind metal-backed board, or give a confused reading in a metal stud frame. Before you drill, find your stopcock (usually under the kitchen sink) and check it turns freely, so you can shut the water off fast if you hit a pipe. If you have any doubt at all, isolate the circuit at the consumer unit before drilling, and turn the water off at the stopcock before cutting into anything that could carry water.
BK-05Fix into solid brick or blockDrill with a masonry bit sized to match your plug, typically 8mm for a heavy-duty plug and coach screw. Drill to a depth of at least 50mm, insert the plug, then drive in an 8x60mm coach screw through the rack's fixing hole. Repeat for each fixing point, checking the rack sits flat as you go.

BK-06Fix into a timber studDrill a 3mm pilot hole into the centre of the stud at each marked point - this stops the screw splitting the timber. Drive in a 6x75mm wood screw through the rack straight into the stud, so the full length of the screw grips solid timber. Never rely on plasterboard alone for a load like a bike rack.

BK-07Fix into a metal stud - the right fixing and its limitsA metal stud is 0.5mm steel - an ordinary wood screw or plastic wall plug will strip straight through it. Use a self-drilling metal-stud screw or a toggle-type hollow-wall anchor rated for the fixing. But a metal stud on its own, even with the right fixing, will not hold a loaded bike rack - the weight pulling away from the wall as a bike is lifted on and off will work the fixing loose over time. For this job you need a timber noggin fitted between the studs, or a fixing that reaches through to masonry behind the wall if there is any.

BK-08Fit a timber noggin between metal studs for a secure fixingCut a small inspection hole, about 150x150mm, in the plasterboard between the two studs either side of your marks, using a plasterboard saw. Cut a length of 38x63mm timber to fit snugly between the studs and screw it to the metal studs with 25mm self-tapping screws, positioned behind your marked fixing points. Cut a patch of plasterboard to fill the hole, screw it to the noggin with plasterboard screws, then fill the joint with filler and let it dry before fixing the rack. This takes longer than a straight fixing, but it's the only reliable way to hang a bike rack from a metal stud wall.

BK-09Fix into dot-and-dab plasterboardDot-and-dab plasterboard is stuck to the masonry with blobs of adhesive, leaving a gap of anywhere from 10mm to 50mm behind the board. Use a long fixing - a frame fixing or masonry bolt of at least 8x100mm - that passes through the board, crosses the gap, and grips at least 40mm into the solid masonry behind. Drill with a matching long masonry bit so you don't stop short in the gap, and check the fixing feels solid, not just gripping the plasterboard skin.

BK-10Fix into lath and plasterLath and plaster walls have thin wooden strips nailed across the studs with plaster keyed into the gaps - it's old and can crumble, so drill slowly and tape around the hole to stop the plaster cracking further. Find the stud behind the laths the same way as a timber stud wall, then fix a 6x100mm wood screw into the centre of the stud, allowing for the extra thickness of lath and plaster. If the plaster feels very loose or hollow over a wide area, get it checked before loading it with a bike rack.

BK-11Mount the rack and check it's secureWith the right fixings in place for your wall, hold the rack against the marks and drive each fixing through the rack's mounting holes. Check the rack is level and doesn't rock when you push gently on it from different angles. Tighten every fixing fully - a loose one puts extra strain on the rest.
BK-12Load-test with the bikeHang your bike on the rack and check nothing moves, creaks or drops. Push down and pull outward on the rack by hand to mimic lifting a bike on and off. If you used a noggin or metal-stud fixing and it flexes at all, take the bike off and check the fixing before using it again.
BK-13Tidy upVacuum up any dust, brick chips or plasterboard debris from the floor and skirting. Bin off-cuts and pack away your tools. Wipe down the wall around the rack so any filler dust doesn't mark it.
