FE-02Find your stopcock and check for cables and pipesBefore drilling anywhere, find your stopcock (usually under the kitchen sink) and check it turns, so you can shut the water off fast if you hit a pipe. Run a cable and pipe detector over the wall — but still treat every hole as if something could be there, since detectors miss deep cables, metal-backed plasterboard, and anything outside the usual safe zones. If you're at all unsure, isolate the circuit at the consumer unit before drilling, and turn off the water at the stopcock before cutting into anything that could carry a pipe.
