Fit a fire extinguisher bracket to a lath and plaster wall

Fit a fire extinguisher bracket securely, finding the right fixing for lath and plaster, stud walls or solid masonry.

AB-01Gather your tools and materialsGet everything ready before you start. You'll need a drill with a range of bits, a screwdriver, a pencil, a spirit level and a tape measure. Lay a dust sheet under the work area to catch plaster or brick dust.

AB-02Check the extinguisher's weight against the bracketMatch the bracket to the extinguisher's size and weight - the kg rating is usually printed on both. A loaded 6kg or 9kg extinguisher pulls much harder on the wall than a small 2kg one, so make sure your fixings later are strong enough for the weight. If the bracket has an adjustable strap, check it's wide enough to hold the extinguisher body firmly.
AB-03Choose a sensible positionFit the bracket somewhere you can reach quickly in a fire, close to an escape route but not blocking it, and not directly above a radiator, hob or other heat source. Keeping the base of the extinguisher around 1m or less from the floor makes it easier to lift down fast - this is sensible home practice, not a legal requirement (that only applies in workplaces under fire safety rules). Avoid corners hidden behind doors or furniture.
AB-04Mark the fixing positions and check levelHold the bracket against the wall in your chosen spot and mark through the screw holes with a pencil. Use a spirit level to check the bracket sits level before marking, so the extinguisher doesn't hang at an angle. Check the hole spacing against the bracket itself rather than by eye.

AB-05Identify your wall type and where the fixing points areThe right fixing depends entirely on what's behind the surface, so work this out before you drill. On lath and plaster, always aim for the timber stud or noggin behind the laths - the laths and plaster alone are too thin and brittle to hold a loaded extinguisher. On plasterboard, work out if the studs are timber or metal: track the line of screw heads with a magnet or stud detector, listen for the hollow sound between studs, and if still unsure, drill a small pilot hole - timber dust means wood, fine grey swarf means metal. On dot-and-dab plasterboard, the studs are timber but solid masonry sits behind an air gap, so you may need a longer fixing to reach it.
AB-06Drill and fit the fixings for your wall typeBefore drilling, run a cable and pipe detector over the whole marked area in both directions - but still treat the wall as if something is there, because detectors miss deep cables, cables in metal conduit, and anything behind metal-backed plasterboard. Find your stopcock (usually under the kitchen sink) and check it turns freely, so you can shut off the water fast if you hit a pipe. If you have any real doubt, isolate the relevant circuit at the consumer unit before drilling, and turn off the water at the stopcock before cutting into anything that could carry it. On solid brick or block: drill a 6mm hole 40mm deep with a masonry bit, insert a matching wall plug, and drive in a 40-50mm screw. On plasterboard over timber studs: drill a 3mm pilot hole into the centre of the stud and drive in a 40-50mm wood screw - no plug needed. On plasterboard over metal studs: never use a plain wall plug or an ordinary wood screw - they strip straight through 0.5mm steel. Use a self-drilling metal-stud screw driven straight in, or a toggle-type hollow-wall anchor if fixing between the studs. On dot-and-dab plasterboard: check with a longer pilot hole first, then use a fixing long enough to pass through the plasterboard, the dab void, and 25-30mm into the masonry behind - usually 75-90mm, with a matching plug. On lath and plaster: locate the stud or noggin behind the laths, stick a strip of masking tape over the drilling point to stop the plaster cracking, then drill a 3mm pilot hole slowly through the plaster and lath into the timber. Drive in a 50-64mm wood screw so it bites at least 25mm into solid timber behind the laths.

AB-07Fit the bracket and attach the extinguisherScrew the bracket to the wall using the fixings you've just set, tightening evenly so it sits flat without rocking. Slot the extinguisher into the bracket or clip the strap around it, following the manufacturer's instructions. Give the extinguisher a firm tug to check the bracket holds its full weight without moving.
AB-08Test, check and tidy upLift the extinguisher out and back in a couple of times to make sure it releases easily - a stiff bracket is no use in a real fire. Vacuum up any plaster or brick dust and fold away the dust sheet. Note the extinguisher's service date somewhere handy so you remember when it needs checking or replacing.
