Fit a fire extinguisher bracket to a timber stud wall

Identify your wall type, choose the right fixing, and mount a fire extinguisher bracket securely and safely.

FE-01Check your extinguisher and gather toolsWeigh or check the label on your extinguisher (1kg, 2kg, 6kg and so on) and confirm the bracket is rated to hold that weight. Read the manufacturer's fitting instructions, since some brackets have specific screw or hole positions. Gather a stud detector, spirit level, tape measure, pencil, cordless drill with wood and masonry bits, and a screwdriver.

FE-02Work out what your wall is made ofRun a magnet or stud detector along a vertical line to find screw heads fixing the plasterboard - regular spacing means a stud wall. Tap the wall: a dull solid thud usually means masonry or dot-and-dab, a hollow sound means a stud wall or lath and plaster. Drill a small 2mm test hole in an unseen spot - pale wood dust means a timber stud, fine grey swarf means a metal stud, grey or red dust means brick or block, and old lath and plaster crumbles then meets a thin timber strip with a gap behind it.
FE-03Choose the right fixing for your wall typeTimber stud: a 40mm No.8 wood screw driven into the centre of the stud, no plug needed. Metal stud: a self-drilling metal-stud fixing or a toggle-type hollow wall anchor rated for the weight - never a plain plastic wall plug or ordinary wood screw, as these strip straight through 0.5mm steel. Solid brick or block: a wall plug matched to a 6mm masonry drill bit with a 40mm screw. Dot-and-dab plasterboard: a longer fixing that passes through the board and dab gap into the solid masonry behind, typically 60-75mm. Lath and plaster: locate the timber lath or joist and screw into that, not just the plaster, since a toggle can crack old lime plaster.

FE-04Mark the position and check safety before drillingPosition the extinguisher near the escape route, not hidden behind a door, with the handle roughly 1.0-1.5m from the floor - lower for a heavy extinguisher, higher for a light one. Mark the fixing holes with a pencil and check them level. Before you drill: cables and pipes can run almost anywhere in a wall, so use a detector but still treat the wall as if something is there and prove otherwise - detectors miss deep cables, cables in metal conduit, anything behind metal-backed plasterboard, and a metal stud frame can confuse a cheap detector further. Find your stopcock (usually under the kitchen sink) and check it turns before you start, so you can shut water off fast if you hit a pipe. If you have any doubt at all, isolate the circuit at the consumer unit before drilling near a socket or light, and turn the water off at the stopcock before cutting into anything that could carry water.
FE-05Fix the bracket to a timber studDrill a 2mm pilot hole in the centre of the stud to guide the screw and stop the wood splitting. Screw the bracket base directly into the stud using 40mm No.8 wood screws, driving straight and not overtightening, which can strip the thread in softwood.
FE-06If it's a metal stud insteadUse a self-drilling metal-stud fixing driven straight through the plasterboard and thin steel channel, or a toggle-type hollow wall anchor if the hole falls between studs. Never use a plain wall plug or ordinary wood screw here - they strip straight through 0.5mm steel. A metal stud alone will not hold a heavy extinguisher that gets yanked hard in a real emergency, so fit a timber noggin or pattress between the studs first, or fix through to masonry behind if the stud wall lines a solid wall.
FE-07If it's solid brick or block insteadDrill with a 6mm masonry bit to the depth of the wall plug plus a few mm, blow out the dust, then insert the plug fully. Drive a 40mm screw into the plug through the bracket, checking it's tight and doesn't spin in the hole.
FE-08If it's dot-and-dab plasterboard insteadDrill through the plasterboard and the dab gap into the solid masonry behind - the gap is usually 10-20mm, so a fixing under 60mm often won't reach solid ground. Use a long frame fixing rated for the weight, driven into a plugged hole in the masonry, not just the plasterboard.
FE-09If it's lath and plaster insteadLocate the timber lath or the stud behind it with your detector or test hole, and fix the screw into that timber, not just the surrounding plaster. Old lime plaster is brittle and can crack around a toggle fixing, so timber is the safer target here.
FE-10Hang the extinguisher and test itCheck the bracket sits level and all screws are tight. Hang the extinguisher and give it a firm downward tug to confirm it's secure. Check the quick-release action works smoothly so it can be grabbed fast in an emergency.
FE-11Tidy upVacuum up drill dust from the floor and skirting, and wipe down the wall. Put tools away and dispose of any masonry dust or offcuts in general waste. Set a reminder to check the extinguisher's pressure gauge and service date periodically.
