Fit a fold-down wall desk to a dot-and-dab plasterboard wall

Fit a fold-down desk to a dot-and-dab wall by fixing through to the masonry behind, not just the plasterboard.

FD-01Gather your tools and check the desk kitUnpack the desk and check the fitting instructions for hole spacing and the maximum weight it's rated for. Lay out a detector, spirit level, tape measure, pencil, drill, drill bits and screwdriver. Put a dust sheet down to catch masonry dust.

FD-02Find your stopcock and check your circuits before you drill anythingCables and pipes can run almost anywhere behind a wall, not just in the 'safe zones'. Run a detector over the area, but still assume something could be there and drill carefully. Find your stopcock (usually under the kitchen sink) and check it turns freely, so you can shut the water off fast if you hit a pipe. If you have any doubt about what's behind the wall, isolate the relevant circuit at the consumer unit before drilling.
FD-03Work out what's actually behind the plasterboardTap the wall: a dull, slightly hollow sound with an uneven pattern usually means dot-and-dab (plasterboard glued to masonry with an air gap of roughly 25-50mm). A drill a few mm in that suddenly meets solid material after a gap confirms it. Even sound with regular hollow patches every 400-600mm means a timber or metal stud wall. A completely solid, dense sound everywhere means solid brick or block with no board at all. An old house with a slightly springy, uneven wall and horizontal ridges under the paint may be lath and plaster.
FD-04If it's a stud wall, work out timber or metal firstRun a magnet or your detector's stud setting across the wall to find a vertical line of screw heads under the plasterboard, usually every 400-600mm. Drill a small 3mm pilot hole at that line: fine pale dust means timber, and fine grey metal swarf means a metal stud. Metal studs are common in flats, new-build houses and anything refitted since the 1990s. Do this check even if you expect dot-and-dab, because some 'dot-and-dab' walls are actually stud walls behind a skim.
FD-05Mark the desk height and level your fixing lineHold the desk bracket against the wall at seated working height, around 730mm from the floor to the top of the desk surface, and mark the top edge. Use a spirit level to draw a level horizontal line, then mark each screw hole position from the bracket onto the wall along that line.
FD-06Choose the right fixing for your wallFor dot-and-dab, you need a fixing long enough to pass through the plasterboard, cross the air gap, and bite at least 40mm into the solid masonry behind — typically a 75-90mm masonry screw with a plastic sleeve, or a resin anchor for extra load. For timber studs, use a wood screw driven into the centre of the stud. For metal studs, use a self-drilling metal-stud fixing or a toggle-type hollow-wall anchor — never a plain plastic wall plug and never an ordinary wood screw, which will strip straight through 0.5mm steel. For solid brick or block with no board, use a plastic plug and screw sized to the fixing (check the packet for drill size). For lath and plaster, locate the timber joists behind the laths rather than trusting the plaster alone, as plaster crumbles under load.

FD-07Drill and fit the fixingsDrill through the plasterboard first at a slow speed, then switch to the correct masonry bit and continue through the air gap into the brick or block, checking the fixing packet for the right drill size and depth. Keep the drill square to the wall. Push the plug or sleeve in fully, then drive the screw until it's snug but not overtightened.

FD-08Fit a noggin if the desk is going into a stud wall with no masonry behindA fold-down desk pulls on its fixings every time it's used, the same way a TV arm does. Plasterboard alone, or a metal stud alone, will not hold this long-term. If you're fixing into a timber or metal stud wall rather than dot-and-dab, cut a small access panel, fit a timber noggin (a horizontal timber bridge) between the studs at desk height, screw it to the studs, then patch the plasterboard back before fixing the desk into the noggin.

FD-09Mount the desk bracket to the wallLift the bracket onto the fitted screws or align it over the pre-drilled holes, then check it's still level. Drive the remaining fixings fully home, tightening evenly across all of them rather than fully tightening one side first.
FD-10Attach the folding leg and desktopFollow the kit's instructions to fit the hinge mechanism and folding leg to the underside of the desktop. Attach the desktop to the wall bracket, making sure the hinges move freely before you tighten everything fully.

FD-11Test the desk before you load itFold the desk down and back up several times to check the leg and hinges move smoothly. Push down firmly on the desktop near the front edge to check for wobble or movement in the wall fixings. If anything moves, stop and add extra fixings or a noggin before using the desk.
FD-12Tidy upVacuum up masonry or plasterboard dust from the floor and skirting. Wipe the wall down and dispose of packaging and any offcuts responsibly.
