Fit a glass bathroom shelf to a dot-and-dab plasterboard wall

Fit a glass bathroom shelf securely to a dot-and-dab plasterboard wall, with fixings for every wall type you might actually find underneath.

GBS-01Gather your tools and materialsLay everything out before you start so you're not hunting for a drill bit halfway through. You'll need a detector, spirit level, tape measure, pencil, drill, and the right fixings for your wall (covered in a later step). Put down a dust sheet under the work area.

GBS-02Confirm what's actually behind the wallEven if you think it's dot-and-dab, check. Tap the wall: a hollow, slightly bouncy sound with occasional firmer patches every 400-600mm is dot-and-dab. Solid brick or block sounds dense and consistent everywhere. A line of screw heads at regular centres (400mm or 600mm) under a magnet or detector means timber or metal studs — a magnet that grabs strongly suggests metal track, a pilot hole that brings out fine grey swarf confirms metal, and one that brings out timber dust confirms wood. Lath and plaster feels slightly springy and often sounds hollow with a faint 'give', common in pre-1930s houses.
GBS-03Mark and level the shelf positionHold the bracket template or shelf against the wall at the height you want. Use the spirit level to draw a level line, then mark your fixing centres on the line. Double-check the shelf will clear the tap, mirror or window before you drill anything.

GBS-04Detect, then drill safelyRun the detector over every marked point before you drill. Detectors miss cables that are deep, in metal conduit, behind metal-backed plasterboard, or outside the usual safe zones — a metal stud frame confuses cheap detectors further. Treat every point as if there's something there until you've proved otherwise with a small test hole. Find your stopcock now, usually under the kitchen sink, and check it turns freely, so you can shut the water off fast if you hit a pipe. If you have any doubt about a cable near your marks, isolate the circuit at the consumer unit before drilling.
GBS-05Drill through the tile without cracking itIf you're drilling through tile, start with a tile bit at slow speed and no hammer action, holding the drill dead straight. Once through the glaze, switch to a masonry or plasterboard bit as needed for the wall behind. Keep steady, light pressure — forcing it is what cracks tiles.

GBS-06Drill the fixing holes for your wall typeFor dot-and-dab, drill through the plasterboard and the void behind it — expect 20-50mm of empty space before you reach the masonry. Keep drilling steadily until you feel the bit bite into solid brick or block, then drill to the depth needed for your masonry plug. For solid masonry with no dot-and-dab, drill straight to the plug depth given on the pack, usually 40-50mm for a bathroom shelf. For timber stud, drill a small pilot hole into the centre of the stud. For metal stud, use a self-drilling bit sized to the fixing you're using.

GBS-07Fit the right fixing for your wallDot-and-dab: use a long fixing (typically 60-75mm) that passes through the plasterboard and dab void and grips solidly in the masonry behind — a standard short plug will only grip the dab and can pull out. Solid brick or block with no dab: a 40-50mm plug and screw is enough. Timber stud: a wood screw driven straight into the centre of the stud, no plug needed. Metal stud: use a self-drilling metal-stud fixing or a toggle-type hollow-wall anchor rated for the shelf's weight — never a plain plastic plug or ordinary wood screw, both strip straight through 0.5mm steel. Lath and plaster: use a long fixing that passes through the plaster key without cracking it, or a spring toggle if the laths feel loose. A glass shelf and its contents are fairly light, so a well-rated toggle fixing into board alone is usually fine away from studs — but if you're not confident, fix into the masonry behind the dab instead.

GBS-08Fit the brackets to the wallScrew each bracket into its fixing, checking with the spirit level as you go. Don't overtighten into plasterboard fixings — snug is enough, and overtightening can crush the board or strip a toggle.
GBS-09Fit the glass shelf and check itSlot the glass shelf into the brackets as per the kit's instructions. Check it's level, then gently push down and side to side to check for movement. If it flexes at the wall, stop and check the fixing rather than just tightening harder.
GBS-10Tidy up and finishWipe down the tiles and wall, and vacuum up drilling dust straight away, especially tile and masonry dust. If the shelf sits against a wet wall or shower area, run a thin bead of bathroom silicone along the top edge of the wall bracket for a neater, more waterproof finish. Leave any silicone to cure for 24 hours before getting it wet.
