Fit a pan rail to a dot-and-dab plasterboard wall

Learn to fix a sturdy pan rail safely on any kitchen wall, checking what's behind before you drill.

PR-01Gather your tools and the pan rail kitUnpack the pan rail and check it comes with hooks and a fixing kit. Lay out your drill, a mixed set of masonry, wood and metal drill bits, a spirit level, pencil, tape measure and a dust sheet. Kitchens generate flying dust and grit, so cover the worktop and hob below the job.

PR-02Mark the height and level lineHold the rail against the wall at your chosen height, usually 1400-1600mm from the floor so it clears worktops and heads. Use a spirit level to get it dead straight, then pencil through the rail's fixing holes onto the wall. Double-check the marks with the level before you drill anything.

PR-03Check what's behind the wall before you drillRun a cable and pipe detector over every marked point. Detectors miss cables that are deep, in metal conduit, behind metal-backed plasterboard, or outside the normal safe zones, and a metal stud frame can confuse a cheap detector further, so still treat the wall as live until proven otherwise. Find your stopcock, usually under the kitchen sink, and check it turns freely before you start. If you have any doubt, isolate the relevant circuit at the consumer unit before drilling, and be ready to turn the water off at the stopcock the moment you hit anything wet.

PR-04Work out what your wall is actually made ofTap along the marked line. A dot-and-dab wall sounds hollow with firmer patches roughly every 300-450mm where the adhesive dabs sit, and a small pilot hole brings out plasterboard dust then hits solid masonry a little further in. A timber stud wall sounds hollow between studs, with a magnet or detector picking up a line of screw heads every 400-600mm; a pilot hole there brings out pale timber dust. A metal stud wall gives the same hollow sound and screw-head line, but a pilot hole brings out fine grey steel swarf instead. Solid brick or block sounds solid everywhere and drills into grey or red masonry dust straight away. Lath and plaster, common in pre-1930s houses, sounds hollow almost everywhere with an uneven, slightly springy feel, and you'll find narrow timber laths behind the plaster with gaps between them.
PR-05Drill and fit the right fixing for your wallA pan rail carries real weight and gets pulled outward every time someone lifts a pan off it, so the fixing matters more than usual. On solid brick or block, drill an 8mm hole 40-50mm deep and fit a red or brown wall plug with a 60mm screw. On a timber stud wall, drill a 2mm pilot hole into the centre of the stud and drive in a 50-60mm wood screw. On a metal stud wall, never use a plain plastic plug or an ordinary wood screw, as it will strip straight through 0.5mm steel; use a self-drilling metal-stud fixing or a toggle-type hollow-wall anchor rated for the load, and if the studs aren't backed by a noggin, fit a timber noggin or pattress between them first. On dot-and-dab, use a long fixing, at least 60-75mm, that passes through the plasterboard and the air gap and bites into the solid masonry behind; a plasterboard-only fixing will eventually pull out under the pulling load. On lath and plaster, aim your fixing into a timber stud or joist behind the laths wherever you can; if you can't, use a proper lath-and-plaster or heavy-duty toggle fixing rather than trusting the plaster alone.

PR-06Screw the rail to the wallOffer the rail up to the fixings and start each screw by hand before tightening fully. Work along the rail rather than pulling one end tight first, so it doesn't twist off level. Recheck with the spirit level once every screw is snug.
PR-07Fit the hooks and load-test the railSlide the hooks onto the rail and hang your heaviest pan or pot on each one. Watch the wall around the fixings closely, especially on dot-and-dab or plasterboard, for any flexing or give. If anything moves, take the rail down and refix into the masonry or a stud rather than trusting the plasterboard alone.
PR-08Clean up and put tools awayVacuum drilling dust from the worktop, hob and floor, checking behind appliances if dust has drifted. Wipe the wall down with a damp cloth. Bin the packaging and store spare fixings in case you need to adjust the rail later.
