Fit a pan rail to a timber stud wall

Learn to mark, drill and fix a kitchen pan rail safely and level, whatever wall type you're working with.

PR-01Gather your tools and pick the heightGet your pan rail kit, drill/driver, spirit level, pencil, tape measure and a stud detector together. A good height is 150-200mm above the worktop, or higher if you're hanging heavy pans, and clear of any cupboard doors swinging open. Mark a rough pencil dot where the rail will sit before you do anything else.

PR-02Work out what your wall is actually made ofRun a stud detector or magnet along the wall. A line of screw or staple heads roughly 400-600mm apart means a timber or metal stud wall. Solid brick or block sounds dull and solid everywhere you tap; plasterboard between studs sounds hollow. Drill a small 3mm pilot hole at your mark: timber dust means a timber stud, fine grey swarf means a metal stud, and solid masonry dust all the way through means solid brick or block. If the drill goes through 30-50mm of plasterboard and adhesive before it hits something solid, that's dot-and-dab. Uneven resistance with old crumbly white or grey dust and thin wooden strips means lath and plaster.
PR-03Mark your fixing points and check what's behind the wallHold the rail up level and mark each bracket's screw holes on the wall with pencil, lining up with stud centres where you can. Before you drill: cables and pipes can run almost anywhere, not just in the 'safe zones'. Use a detector, but still treat every hole as if something could be there until you've proved otherwise, because detectors miss cables that are deep, in metal conduit, or behind metal-backed board. Find your stopcock now, usually under the kitchen sink, and check it turns freely. If you have any doubt at all, isolate the circuit at the consumer unit before drilling, and be ready to shut off the water at the stopcock straight away if you hit a pipe.

PR-04Drill and fit the right fixing for your wallTimber stud: drill a 2mm pilot hole into the centre of the stud and drive in a 45mm No.8 wood screw directly, no plug needed. Solid brick or block: drill with a 6mm masonry bit to 40mm deep, push in a plug, and use a 50mm screw. Dot-and-dab: your fixing needs to reach through the plasterboard and adhesive dabs into the masonry behind, so use a longer 60-75mm fixing rated for the combined depth. Metal stud: never use a plain wall plug or an ordinary wood screw, as it will strip straight through 0.5mm steel; use a self-drilling metal-stud fixing, or a hollow-wall toggle if fixing between studs. If your pan rail will carry heavy cast iron pans and the fixing point is between metal studs rather than into one, a plasterboard toggle rated for the load is safer than trusting the board alone. Lath and plaster: aim for the centre of a lath, use a slightly longer screw to get a good bite, and don't overtighten, as old plaster cracks easily.

PR-05Fit the brackets to the wallScrew each bracket to the wall through the fixings you've just placed. Check the brackets are level with your spirit level before fully tightening. Pull each screw up firm but stop as soon as it's snug, especially on plasterboard or old plaster, where overtightening can crack the surface or strip the fixing.
PR-06Hang the rail and test itClip or hook the rail onto the fitted brackets and check it sits level and secure. Hang a couple of pans on it and give it a firm tug to test the fixing before loading it up properly. If anything feels loose or moves in the wall, stop and re-check that fixing rather than trusting it.
PR-07Tidy upVacuum or wipe away any drilling dust from the worktop and floor. Remove your dust sheet and put tools away. Check the fixings again after a day or two of normal use, once the rail has had a few pans hung on it.
