Fit a pan rail to a metal stud wall

Fit a pan rail securely into your kitchen wall, working out what's behind the plasterboard before you drill or fix anything.

AB-01Plan the job and gather your toolsDecide how high you want the pan rail — most people fix it 150-200mm above the worktop, clear of the tap and any sockets. Mark a level guide line with a pencil and spirit level. Lay a dust sheet under the work area and get your tools together before you start.

AB-02Work out what's behind the wallRun a cable and pipe detector over the whole marked area, then check for framing: a magnet run down the wall will stick to the screw heads on a metal stud in a neat vertical line, while timber studs give a duller signal and no magnetic pull. Drill a 3mm pilot hole in a spot the rail will cover to confirm — pale wood dust means timber, fine grey swarf means metal, and solid material a few centimetres in with no frame means brick, block, or dot-and-dab. Before you drill, find your stopcock (usually under the kitchen sink) and check it turns, so you can shut off the water fast if you hit a pipe. If you have any doubt about what's hiding in the wall, isolate the circuit at the consumer unit and turn off the water at the stopcock before you go any further.

AB-03Mark the stud centres and the noggin positionMetal stud walls are usually framed at 600mm centres, though some are 450mm — use what you found in the last step to mark the centre of the two studs nearest your level line. Mark a cutting line 40-50mm above and below your level line, running between those two stud centres, to show the strip of plasterboard you'll remove for the noggin. Double-check with the spirit level that this strip is truly horizontal before you cut anything.

AB-04Cut out the access stripScore along your marked lines with a sharp trimming knife or a plasterboard saw, cutting only through the plasterboard, not into the void behind. Snap the strip forward and cut through the paper backing to remove it, exposing the cavity between the two studs. Keep the cut as small as you can — you only need enough of a gap to fit and fix the noggin.

AB-05Fit a timber noggin between the studsFor a metal stud wall, cut a 45x35mm timber noggin to span between the stud centres and sit it flat against the inside of the metal stud flanges, then fix it to each flange with two self-drilling metal-stud screws (25mm) — don't overtighten, or you'll strip the thin steel. If you actually found timber studs, fix the same noggin with 40mm woodscrews driven into the centre of each stud instead. If your pilot hole showed solid brick, block, or dot-and-dab, skip the noggin altogether — you can fix straight through the plasterboard into the masonry behind using a long enough plug and screw. If you found lath and plaster, screw the noggin to the timber studs behind the laths where you can find them, since standard toggle fixings don't grip old lime plaster well.

AB-06Patch the plasterboardCut a patch of plasterboard to fit the strip you removed and screw it to the noggin with 32mm plasterboard screws, roughly every 150mm. Fill the joints and screw heads with jointing filler, feather the edges with a filling knife, and leave it to dry fully — usually a few hours — before sanding smooth.

AB-07Mark the final fixing pointsOnce the filler is dry, hold the pan rail or its fixing template against the wall on your level line and mark each screw position through it. Check every mark lines up with the timber noggin underneath — if a point only lands on bare plasterboard or an open metal stud web, shift the rail slightly or add a small extra pattress piece so all fixings land on solid timber.

AB-08Drill and fix the pan rail bracketsAs before, treat every mark as if a cable or pipe could be behind it — check with your detector again, and keep the stopcock and consumer unit isolation in mind if anything feels off. Drill a pilot hole at each mark sized for your screw, then fix the bracket with 40mm wood screws into the noggin behind. Never use a plain wood screw straight into a metal stud on its own — it strips straight through 0.5mm steel — and never rely on bare plasterboard between studs for a loaded pan rail, as it will pull the fixing straight out. Tighten evenly until each bracket sits flush, checking level as you go.

AB-09Hang the rail and load-test itClip or screw the pan rail onto its fixed brackets following the kit instructions, then check it's level end to end. Hang your heaviest pan first and give the rail a firm downward and outward tug to check the fixings hold before loading it fully.
AB-10Tidy upVacuum plasterboard dust from the floor and worktop, and wipe down surfaces with a damp cloth. Bag up offcuts and packaging for disposal, and store any leftover fixings for future jobs.
