Fit a pan rail to a lath and plaster wall

Mount a pan rail level and secure, finding solid fixings behind lath and plaster so it holds real weight.

AB-01Plan the height and mark the lineDecide where the rail goes - a common height is 1400-1600mm from the floor, clear of worktops and cupboard doors. Hold the rail up and check it looks right, then mark a level line along the wall with a pencil using a spirit level, not by eye. Mark the position of each bracket or fixing point on this line before you touch a drill.

AB-02Work out what is actually behind the plasterLath and plaster is thin timber strips nailed across studs or joists, spaced roughly 400-600mm apart, with the plaster keyed through the gaps between the laths. Run a stud detector or magnet along your marked line to find the line of nail heads underneath, and tap gently - a dull thud usually means timber close behind, a hollow knock means you're between laths. If you're not sure, drill a small pilot hole at a fixing point: fine pale wood dust means you've hit a lath or timber stud, grey powder alone means you're only in the plaster with nothing solid yet.

AB-03Check for cables and pipes before you drillCables and pipes can run almost anywhere in a wall, not just in the usual safe zones, and cheap detectors can miss cables that are deep, in metal conduit, or behind old wire lath backing. Sweep the whole fixing area with a detector, then still treat the wall as if something is there until you prove otherwise. Find your stopcock now, usually under the kitchen sink, and check it turns freely, so you can shut the water off fast if you hit a pipe. If you have any doubt, isolate the relevant circuit at the consumer unit before drilling, and turn off the water at the stopcock before cutting into anything that could carry it.

Not a legal requirement here, but Part P of the Building Regulations covers notifiable electrical work in kitchens - if you damage a cable and need to repair or alter the wiring, that work may need to be notified or done by a qualified electrician.

AB-04Drill the fixing holes for your wall typeFor true lath and plaster, drill through the plaster and lath at each mark until you feel the bit bite into solid timber behind - don't stop in the lath itself, it will crack and crumble under load. For solid brick or block behind old battens, use a masonry bit sized to your wall plug and drill to the depth marked on the plug packet, usually 45-50mm. If the wall turns out to be a later stud partition, drill a 2-3mm pilot hole into the centre of a timber stud, or use a self-drilling point for a metal stud - never force an ordinary wood screw into 0.5mm steel, it strips straight through. For dot-and-dab plasterboard, drill through the board and the adhesive dabs behind it (often 10-40mm) until you reach solid masonry, and use a long enough bit to feel the difference.

AB-05Fit the right fixing for the wall behindInto timber behind lath and plaster or a timber stud, use a 50-60mm wood screw driven straight into the timber, missing the plaster edges as much as possible. Into solid brick or block, use a matching wall plug (typically red or brown) with a 50-60mm screw, pushed fully home in the hole. Into a metal stud, use a proper self-drilling metal-stud fixing or hollow-wall toggle rated for the load - a pan rail loaded with pans pulls outward, so a fixing between studs alone is not enough; fit a timber noggin between the studs first, or fix through to masonry behind if there is any. Into dot-and-dab, use a fixing long enough to pass through the board and adhesive gap and grip in the masonry, not just a plug in the plasterboard alone.

AB-06Offer up and fix the rail to the wallGet a second person to hold the rail on your marked line, or prop it on two temporary battens screwed lightly below the line. Drive the fixings home one at a time, checking the rail against your spirit level as you go, and don't fully tighten the first screw until the second one is started. Once all fixings are in, do a final level check along the whole length.

AB-07Load-test before you hang anything heavyPush and pull the rail firmly at each fixing point and along its length - it should not flex, creak, or move away from the wall. Hang your heaviest pan or pan lid on it and leave it for a few minutes before trusting the rail with a full load. This matters most on lath and plaster, dot-and-dab, and metal stud walls, where a poor fixing can look fine at first and fail later.
AB-08Tidy up and finish offVacuum or brush away plaster dust and wood shavings from the floor and worktop below. Fill any stray pilot holes or chipped plaster edges around the fixings with a small amount of filler, let it dry, then touch up with matching paint if needed. Wipe the rail down and fit your pan hooks once everything is dry and secure.
