Fit a projector mount to a lath and plaster ceiling

Locate the ceiling joists, fit a noggin if needed, then mount your projector safely and level.

PJ-01Plan the position and gather your toolsWork out your projector's throw distance from its manual so you know roughly where on the ceiling the mount needs to go. Check the spot is reachable safely from a step ladder and that there's a sensible route for the cable back to a socket. Lay a dust sheet on the floor below, since lath and plaster sheds dust and small debris even when you're careful.

PJ-02Check for cables before you touch the ceilingLighting circuits and sometimes pipes for a bathroom above often run through ceiling voids, so sweep the area with a cable and pipe detector before doing anything else. Detectors can miss cables that are deep, in metal conduit, or behind old lath and plaster's metal lath in some ceilings, so still treat every spot as if something's there until you've drilled a small test hole and checked what comes out. Find your consumer unit and stopcock now — the stopcock is usually under the kitchen sink — so you can isolate the electrics or shut off water instantly if you hit something. If you have any doubt at all, switch off the relevant circuit at the consumer unit before drilling.

PJ-03Find the ceiling joistsLath and plaster ceilings are thin plaster keyed over narrow timber laths, nailed across joists usually spaced 400-450mm apart — the laths themselves hold no weight at all, so you must find the joists behind them. Tap along the ceiling and listen for the change from a hollow sound between joists to a duller, solid sound over one; a detector will also often pick up the line of nail or screw heads fixing the laths to each joist. Mark the centre of the joist with masking tape in a line, then measure across to find the next one and confirm the spacing.

PJ-04Confirm what the joist is made ofAlmost all lath and plaster ceilings sit on timber joists, but some flats and converted properties have steel resilient bars or a metal frame beneath the plaster for soundproofing. Drill a small 2-3mm pilot hole at your marked point: fine pale dust means timber, and bright metal swarf means you've hit a metal bar or joist instead. If it's metal, don't rely on it for a fixing that takes weight — plan instead to fix through it into the timber joist above, using a self-drilling screw sized for the metal thickness.

PJ-05Fit a noggin if no joist lines up with your mountIf your ideal projector position falls between two joists, don't fix into the plaster alone — it will crack and pull free under load. From the loft or roof void above, fit a timber noggin of the same depth as the joists, screwed between them at the exact point you need, or screw a plywood pattress board across the underside of two joists as a fixing point. Skip this step entirely if a joist already lands where you need it.

PJ-06Drill pilot holes without cracking the plasterStick a small cross of masking tape over each fixing point first — this stops the brittle old plaster from star-cracking as the drill bites. Drill a 3mm pilot hole straight through the plaster and lath into the joist, going slowly and letting the bit clear its own dust rather than forcing it. Check the hole lines up with solid joist by feeling for resistance the whole way through, not just at the surface.

PJ-07Fix the mounting plate to the right baseInto a timber joist or noggin, use a wood screw at least 60-70mm long so it bites well into solid timber through the plaster and lath thickness. Into a steel joist or resilient bar, use a self-drilling metal fixing sized for the metal gauge, and where possible fix on through into the timber joist above for real strength. If the ceiling is a solid concrete soffit rather than lath and plaster — some ground-floor flats have this — drill 6-8mm and use a suitable wall plug with a matching screw instead. Never rely on a plasterboard toggle or hollow-wall anchor here; a projector mount takes a constant static load and needs a fixing straight into structure.

PJ-08Fit the mount and hang the projectorScrew the mounting plate up into your fixing points, then attach the drop arm or adjustable bracket and hand-tighten the projector onto it. Use a spirit level to check the projector sits level and square to your screen or wall before fully tightening all bolts.

PJ-09Route the cable back to a socketClip the HDMI and power cable neatly along the ceiling and down the wall using cable clips, or run it through slim trunking for a tidier finish, then plug into an existing socket. If you want the cable to disappear into the ceiling void or you're adding a new fixed socket rather than plugging into an existing one, that's notifiable electrical work under Part P of the Building Regulations, and you should use a qualified electrician or have the work checked by your local authority building control.

PJ-10Test the fit, patch, and tidy upGive the mount a firm downward and sideways tug to check it's solid before trusting it with the projector permanently. Fill any hairline cracks around the fixing points with fine surface filler, leave to dry, then touch up with matching paint. Clear away dust and offcuts, fold up the dust sheet, and dispose of any plaster debris in your household waste.
