Fit a projector mount to a plasterboard ceiling

Fit a projector ceiling mount safely by locating solid fixings, checking for hidden cables and pipes, then tidying the cable run.

PJ-01Work out the mount positionCheck your projector's throw ratio and lens offset against the screen size and position, then mark the centre point on the ceiling with a pencil. Most rooms have ceiling joists running across the shortest span at 400mm or 600mm centres, so note which way they likely run before you start. Hold the mount's baseplate up to the marked spot to check the fixing holes will land somewhere sensible.

PJ-02Do your safety checks before you drillCables and pipes can run almost anywhere in a ceiling void, including up to light fittings, so run a cable and pipe detector over the whole marked area first. Detectors miss deep cables, cables in metal conduit, and anything behind metal-backed plasterboard, and a metal ceiling frame confuses cheap detectors even more, so still treat the ceiling as live until proven otherwise. Find your stopcock (usually under the kitchen sink) and check it turns freely before you start. If you have any doubt at all, switch off the relevant circuit at the consumer unit before drilling.

PJ-03Identify what the ceiling is made ofRun your detector slowly along the marked line and look for a regular pattern of screw heads or a change in reading roughly every 400-600mm; that spacing usually means timber joists, tighter or wider metal readings often mean a metal channel ceiling. Tap along the line: a dull thud usually means a joist or channel behind, a hollow sound means only plasterboard. Drill a small 3mm pilot hole at your fixing point and look at what comes out: pale dust means timber, fine grey swarf means metal, and a grittier dust with no timber smell can mean lath and plaster or a solid concrete soffit.

PJ-04Timber joist ceiling: fix straight into the joistA projector hangs overhead, so never rely on plasterboard alone here; always find the centre of a joist and fix into solid timber. Drill a 3mm pilot hole into the joist centre, then drive the coach screws supplied with the mount, or 6x60mm coach screws if none are supplied, so at least 40mm of screw bites into the joist. If your marked spot lands between joists, shift the mount slightly rather than relying on a toggle fixing for an overhead load.

PJ-05Metal stud or channel ceiling: don't trust the channel aloneA self-drilling metal-stud fixing will grip a 0.5mm steel channel, but it is not rated to carry a projector safely on its own overhead. Get into the loft or void above if you can and fit a short timber noggin, at least 45x45mm, screwed between the metal channels directly above your marked point, then fix the mount up through the plasterboard and channel into the noggin with wood screws. If you cannot access above, fix a timber pattress board across at least two channels using self-drilling metal-stud screws, then mount onto the pattress; never use a plain plastic wall plug or an ordinary wood screw straight into the steel, as it will strip through.

PJ-06Lath and plaster ceiling: fix through to the joistOld lath and plaster is brittle and will crack if you fix into it alone, so you still need the joist behind. Pilot drill carefully at low speed to avoid shattering the plaster, then use screws long enough to pass through the plaster, laths and at least 40mm into the joist, typically 6x75mm coach screws. If a lath cracks slightly around the hole, that's normal; just make sure the fixing itself is solidly into the joist, not just gripping plaster.

PJ-07Solid concrete ceiling: use a heavy-duty masonry anchorIn some flats and conversions the ceiling is a bare concrete soffit under a skim of plaster, which you'll feel as solid with no hollow sound anywhere. Use an SDS drill with a 10mm masonry bit to drill to the depth stated on your anchor packaging, usually 50-60mm, then fit a heavy-duty metal projector-rated anchor, not a standard plastic wall plug. Clear the dust from the hole with a blower or brush before inserting the anchor so it grips properly.

PJ-08Fit the mount and attach the projectorScrew the baseplate up using the fixings for your ceiling type, checking it feels solid with no movement when you pull down on it firmly by hand. Attach the mount arm and lower plate, then fit the projector using the screws supplied with it, checking the manufacturer's maximum tilt and drop specs. Use a spirit level to check the plate is level before fully tightening every screw.

PJ-09Route the cables and check Part PRun the HDMI and power cable along the ceiling and down the wall inside self-adhesive cable trunking to the nearest existing socket; this avoids touching the fixed wiring, so no notification rules apply. If you want a socket added near the ceiling instead of using an extension lead, that's new fixed wiring and best left to a qualified electrician, or a competent DIYer following Part P notification rules if it's in a kitchen or bathroom.

KNOW THE RULES

Part P of the Building Regulations covers new fixed electrical wiring in kitchens, bathrooms and outdoors. Running a cable to an existing socket via trunking isn't notifiable work, but adding a brand new socket may be, depending on the room.

PJ-10Final check and tidy upGive the mount a firm downward and sideways tug test with the projector fitted to make sure nothing has shifted. Hoover up any dust from drilling, especially plaster dust on the floor below, and wipe down surfaces. Check all screws are tight and store any leftover fixings in a labelled bag in case you need to adjust the mount later.
