Fit a pull-down projector screen to solid brick or block, with fixings driven safely into the masonry behind.

PS-01Plan the screen positionDecide the screen height so the bottom of the image clears any furniture and the top sits below the ceiling line. Measure the screen's fixing centres from the box — most brackets are 40mm to 100mm in from each end. Hold the screen (or a cardboard mock-up) in place and check the projector's throw lines up before you mark anything.

PS-02Check the wall and plan for hidden servicesEven on a solid wall, cables and pipes can run almost anywhere — use a detector, but still expect something to be there and prove it isn't before you drill. Detectors can miss cables that are deep, in metal conduit, or outside the usual safe zones above sockets and switches. Find your stopcock (usually under the kitchen sink) and check it turns freely, so you can shut the water off fast if you hit a pipe. If you have any doubt, isolate the relevant circuit at the consumer unit before drilling.

PS-03Mark and level the fixing pointsHold a bracket at your planned height and mark through the fixing holes with a pencil. Use a spirit level to draw a level line across to the second bracket position, then mark its holes the same way. Double-check both marks are level before you drill — an out-of-level screen is obvious the moment it's down.

PS-04Drill into the masonryTap a small test hole first — solid brick or block gives dust and a solid, gritty feel. If instead you hit a hollow sound and the drill breaks through into a gap, you've found dot-and-dab plasterboard over the brick, and your fixings need to be long enough to pass through the dab (typically 10-40mm) and still bite at least 30mm into the masonry behind. Drill 6mm holes to 40-50mm deep for standard red wall plugs, using a masonry bit and a hammer action if your drill has one.

PS-05Fit the wall plugs and bracketsPush a wall plug into each hole so it sits flush with the wall. Hold the bracket in place and drive a screw into each plug until it's snug — not overtightened, or you'll crack the plaster around the hole. Fit the second bracket the same way, then give both a firm tug to check they're solid before loading any weight on them.

PS-06Hang the screen and test itLift the screen unit onto the brackets and make sure it clicks or seats fully home on both sides. Pull the screen down gently to check it runs smoothly and locks at the length you want, then let it retract. Check the screen is level and hasn't shifted the brackets before you leave it.

PS-07Tidy upSweep or hoover up brick dust from the floor and skirting. Wipe down the wall and screen casing with a dry cloth. Keep any spare screws and plugs from the kit in case you need to re-tension or re-fit later.
