Hang a dartboard on a solid brick or block wall — HomeGraft

Plan the height, drill and fix safely, then hang and level your dartboard for a proper game.

DB-01Plan the position and mark the heightOfficial height puts the bullseye 1.73m from the floor, with the oche (throw line) 2.37m out from the board's face. Measure up from the floor and mark this point in pencil. Use a spirit level to draw a short level line through the mark so the bracket sits true. Check there's clear space either side and above for a comfortable throw.

DB-02Check the wall and mark the fixing pointTap the wall to confirm it sounds solid and dense, and run a detector over the area to check for obvious cable or pipe runs. Hold the dartboard's backing bracket against the wall at your marked height and mark through the fixing hole with a pencil. Most dartboards use a single keyhole bracket, so one strong fixing is normally enough.

DB-03Do a safety check before you drillCables and pipes can run in unexpected places, even in solid brick or block, so don't rely on the detector alone. Find your stopcock now (usually under the kitchen sink) and check it turns, so you can shut off the water fast if you ever hit a pipe. If you have any doubt about what's behind this wall, isolate the relevant circuit at the consumer unit before you drill, and only start once you're confident the spot is clear.

DB-04Drill and fit the wall plugDrill straight into the brick or block using a 6mm masonry bit, going about 5mm deeper than your wall plug's length, so around 45-50mm deep for a 40mm plug. Drill in short bursts and ease off if you meet sudden resistance or feel it run oddly easy, which can mean a gap or cavity behind. Push a red 6mm plastic wall plug in flush with the wall, then brush away the dust.

DB-05Fit the screw and hang the boardDrive a 40mm screw into the plug, leaving about 5-8mm standing clear of the wall so the bracket can hook over it. Lift the dartboard onto the screw, hook the keyhole bracket over the screw head, then let it settle down and back to lock in place. Give the board a firm push to check it's secure and doesn't wobble.

DB-06Check it's level and adjust if neededRest your spirit level along the top edge of the board to check it's sitting level. If it's slightly off, lift the board free, adjust the screw very slightly, then rehang it. Stand back and check the height and spacing feel right for throwing.

DB-07Tidy upVacuum up any brick dust from the floor and skirting, and wipe down the wall below the fixing. Fold away your dust sheet and put your tools away. Take a step back, then throw your first darts.
