RB-04Check for cables and pipes before you drillRun a cable and pipe detector over each fixing point, but don't trust it completely — detectors miss cables that are deep, run in metal conduit, or sit outside the usual safe zones, and old metal lath can throw a cheap detector off further. Find your stopcock (usually under the kitchen sink) and check it turns freely, so you can cut the water fast if you hit a pipe. If you have any doubt at all, isolate the relevant circuit at the consumer unit before drilling.
