Fit a screw-fit stair gate to a timber stud wall

Fit a screw-fit stair gate safely, checking your wall type first and using the right screws or anchors for a secure fit.

SG-01Unpack the kit and check the gapLay out all the parts and count them against the instructions. Measure the width of the opening at the top, middle and bottom, since stair openings are rarely square. Check this fits the gate's stated size range before you start drilling anything.

SG-02Mark the fixing heightHold the gate frame in the opening at the height given in the instructions, usually around 100-150mm above the floor. Use a spirit level to get both fixing posts level with each other, then mark the top and bottom screw positions on each side with a pencil.

SG-03Work out what each wall is made ofRun a stud detector or magnet along the marked line — a row of screw heads under paint means plasterboard on studs. Tap the wall: a dull thud is solid brick or block, a hollow sound is stud or dot-and-dab. Drill a small pilot hole at one mark and check what comes out — pale timber dust means a wood stud, fine grey powder means masonry or dot-and-dab, and shiny metal swarf means a metal stud.

SG-04Check for cables and pipes, and know your shut-offsCables and pipes can run in places a detector misses, especially behind metal-backed board or in metal conduit, and a metal stud frame can confuse a cheap detector further. Find your stopcock now, usually under the kitchen sink, and check it turns freely so you can shut the water off fast if you hit a pipe. If you have any doubt at all, switch off the relevant circuit at the consumer unit before you drill.
SG-05Drill and fit the first postInto a timber stud: drill a 3mm pilot hole in the centre of the stud and use a wood screw at least 40mm long. Into solid brick or block: drill 6mm at 45mm deep, insert a wall plug, then screw. Through dot-and-dab plasterboard: use a fixing long enough to pass through the board and adhesive dabs and bite at least 30mm into the masonry behind, usually 60-75mm total. Into lath and plaster: work slowly, use a long screw that reaches a wooden lath, and expect the old plaster to be brittle.

SG-06Metal stud walls: use the right fixing, or don't rely on the stud aloneIf the pilot hole brought out metal swarf, never use a plain wall plug or a wood screw — they strip straight through 0.5mm steel. Use a self-drilling metal-stud fixing or a toggle-type hollow-wall anchor rated for the load instead. A stair gate gets pushed and leaned on hard by a child, and a metal stud on its own often isn't strong enough for this repeated pulling force — if you can, fix into a timber noggin between the studs, or through to the masonry behind, or choose a pressure-fit gate for that side instead.

SG-07Fit the second postRepeat the wall-type check and matching fixing method from the previous steps on the other side of the opening. Check the two posts are still level with each other before you tighten the final screws.
SG-08Attach the gate frame and hang the doorFit the hinge and latch brackets to the posts following the kit instructions. Hang the gate section and check it swings freely without catching on the floor or frame.
SG-09Test the gate properlySwing the gate open and shut several times and check the latch locks securely every time. Give the closed gate a firm push from both sides to check the fixings hold without any movement in the wall.
SG-10Tidy upVacuum up drill dust from the floor and wipe down the wall around the fixings. Store any spare screws and plugs in a labelled bag in case you need to remove and refit the gate later.
