Fit a screw-fit stair gate to a lath and plaster wall

Fit a screw-fit stair gate securely by identifying your wall type first and using the fixing method that suits it.

AB-01Plan where the gate will go and check the kitDecide whether you're fitting the gate at the top or bottom of the stairs, and pick a spot at least 50mm back from the top step's nosing so the gate frame doesn't overlap the tread. Lay out the kit and check you have both wall cups or brackets, the correct screws, and any spacers needed for a wide opening. Measure the opening width at the height you'll fit the gate, since stair openings are rarely perfectly square.

AB-02Check what each side wall is made ofStair walls often differ from one side to the other, so check both fixing points separately. Tap the wall: a dull, solid knock means brick or block; a hollow sound with a bit of give means plasterboard or lath and plaster. Lath and plaster feels slightly springy and can show faint horizontal ridges under the paint where the timber laths sit behind. If the house was built before around 1930 it's often lath and plaster; if it's been re-plastered since, the original wall may now be dot-and-dab over brick.
AB-03Detect cables and pipes, and find your stopcockRun a cable and pipe detector over every fixing point before you drill anything. Cables and pipes can run almost anywhere, so even with a clear reading, still treat the wall as if something's there — detectors miss cables that are deep, in metal conduit, behind metal-backed board, or outside the usual zones, and metal stud frames confuse cheap detectors further. Before you drill, find your stopcock (usually under the kitchen sink) and check it turns freely, so you can shut off the water fast if you hit a pipe. If you have any doubt at all, isolate the circuit at the consumer unit before drilling near a socket or light, and turn off the stopcock before drilling anywhere pipes might run.

AB-04Drill and fix into solid brick or blockMark your fixing points with a pencil, using a spirit level to keep both sides level with each other. Drill with a 6mm masonry bit to a depth of 40-45mm, push in a red wall plug, then drive in a 40mm countersunk screw until the bracket sits flat against the wall. Repeat for every fixing point, checking the level as you go.

AB-05Drill and fix into lath and plasterLath and plaster is soft and can crack, so always aim your fixing into a timber stud or the door frame behind it, never into the laths alone — thin laths won't hold a gate that children push and pull on. Find the stud with your detector or by the change in sound, then drill a 3mm pilot hole through the plaster and lath into the timber to stop the plaster cracking. Drive in a 50mm screw so it bites at least 30mm into solid timber behind the plaster. If a marked fixing point doesn't line up with a stud, fit a timber batten or noggin behind the plaster first, or fix into the door architrave instead.

AB-06Drill and fix into plasterboard on timber studsTimber studs usually sit every 400-600mm behind plasterboard. To confirm which you have, drill a small pilot hole at your marked point: timber dust means a timber stud, fine grey swarf means a metal stud. Once you've confirmed a timber stud, drill a pilot hole and drive a 40mm wood screw into the centre of it. Don't rely on the plasterboard alone between studs — it will pull out under the repeated pushing and pulling a stair gate gets.

AB-07Drill and fix into plasterboard on metal studsMetal studs give a lighter, tinnier sound than timber, and a magnet often sticks to the screw heads holding the plasterboard on. Never use a plastic wall plug or an ordinary wood screw here — it strips straight through the thin 0.5mm steel. Use a self-drilling metal-stud fixing or a toggle-type hollow-wall anchor rated for the load instead. A stair gate takes constant pushing and pulling, so a metal stud on its own is often not strong enough — get a timber noggin fitted between the studs, or fix through to any masonry behind, before trusting this wall to hold the gate long-term.

AB-08Drill and fix into dot-and-dab plasterboardDot-and-dab plasterboard is stuck to the masonry with blobs of adhesive, leaving a gap of anywhere from 10mm to 40mm behind the board. Use a long masonry drill bit to go through the plasterboard, the gap, and into the solid wall behind — hold a 75mm screw against the bit and mark the depth with tape before you start. Fit a dot-and-dab fixing with a sleeve that bridges the gap, so the screw pulls tight against solid masonry rather than just the plasterboard.

AB-09Fit the wall brackets or cupsScrew the brackets or cups to the wall at each marked point, using the fixing that matches that particular wall. Check both sides are level with each other with a spirit level before fully tightening. Snug the screws down firmly but don't overtighten, especially into lath and plaster, as this can crack the surface.
AB-10Hang the gate and test itClip or slot the gate into the fitted brackets, following the kit's own instructions for your model. Open and close it a few times to check the latch engages properly and the gate sits square in the opening. Give it a firm push from both sides to check the fixings hold with no movement or flex.
AB-11Tidy up and recheck after a weekVacuum up any plaster or masonry dust and wipe the wall down. Go back after a week of normal use and check every screw is still tight, especially if you fixed into lath and plaster or a stud wall, as these can settle slightly.
