Fit a shower riser rail to a timber stud wall

Fit a shower riser rail safely and level, checking your wall type first, then choosing the right fixing for a secure hold.

AB-01Lay out your kit and toolsUnpack the riser rail kit and check you have both brackets, the rail, end caps and grub screws. The screws in the box are usually only right for solid masonry, so don't assume they'll suit your wall. Get a drill, spirit level, pencil, dust sheet and a stud/cable detector ready before you start.

AB-02Work out what's behind the tilesTap the wall — a dull thud usually means solid brick or block, a hollow sound means plasterboard or dot-and-dab. If it's a stud wall, run a detector or magnet along the line to find screw heads, then drill a small pilot hole: pale dust means timber, fine grey swarf means metal studs. Older houses may have lath and plaster — this feels slightly bouncy and the plaster can be thin and crumbly.

AB-03Check safety before you drillCables and pipes can run almost anywhere behind a bathroom wall, and detectors miss cables in metal conduit or behind foil-backed board — always expect something to be there until you've proved otherwise. Find your stopcock, usually under the kitchen sink, and check it turns freely so you can shut the water off fast if you hit a pipe. If you have any doubt, isolate the relevant circuit at the consumer unit before drilling near sockets or lighting, and turn the water off at the stopcock before drilling near any shower feed pipework.
AB-04Mark and level the bracket positionsHold the rail against the wall to check it clears the shower tray and any glass panel. Mark the top bracket at roughly 1900–2000mm from the tray, then use the spacing in your kit (usually 550–600mm) to mark the bottom bracket. Use a spirit level to keep both marks true before drilling anything.

AB-05Fix brackets — solid brick or block wallDrill through the tile slowly with a tile bit, then switch to a masonry bit sized to your wall plug (usually 6mm) once you're through the glaze. Drill to plug length plus 10mm to give room for dust, blow out the hole, then insert the plug and drive the screw until snug — not overtightened.

AB-06Fix brackets — plasterboard on timber studsLine the bracket up so both screw holes sit on the centre of a timber stud — don't rely on just one edge. Drill a pilot hole slightly narrower than the screw to stop the wood splitting, then drive a wood screw straight in. No wall plug is needed in solid timber.

AB-07Fix brackets — plasterboard on metal studsNever use a plain wall plug or an ordinary wood screw in a metal stud — it strips straight through the thin steel. Use a self-drilling metal-stud fixing or a toggle-type hollow-wall anchor rated for the load instead. A riser rail gets pulled and gripped for support, so metal stud alone often isn't strong enough — where possible, fix through to the brick or block behind, or have a timber noggin fitted between the studs first.

AB-08Fix brackets — dot-and-dab plasterboardDot-and-dab has a 40–50mm gap of adhesive dabs between the board and the masonry, so a short fixing only grips the board — not enough for a rail that takes body weight. Use a long dot-and-dab fixing (around 75–100mm) that passes through the board and adhesive and bites into the solid wall behind. Drill pilot holes carefully and check for solid resistance as you go, not a hollow gap.

AB-09Fix brackets — lath and plaster wallIf you can find a timber stud or noggin behind the laths, fix a wood screw straight into it — this is far stronger than fixing into the laths alone. If there's no timber to hit, use a spring toggle sized for the wall thickness, and drill slowly to avoid cracking the old plaster. Support the area with masking tape first, as lath and plaster crumbles easily around new holes.

AB-10Fit the rail and end capsWith both brackets fixed and level, slide or click the rail into place following your kit's instructions. Tighten any grub screws to lock the rail in position, then push on the end caps to finish.
AB-11Seal the brackets and test the fixingRun a thin bead of sanitary silicone around the base of each bracket where it meets the tile, to stop water getting behind it. Smooth it with a wet finger and leave it to cure for the time stated on the tube, usually 24 hours, before using the shower. Give the rail a firm pull to check it feels solid before relying on it.

AB-12Clean upVacuum tile dust and drilling debris from the floor and bath or shower tray. Wipe down the tiles and wall, and dispose of packaging and offcuts.
