Fit a straight shower curtain rail to a timber stud wall

Fit a straight shower curtain rail safely and securely, whatever your bathroom wall is made of.

AB-01Plan the position and gather your toolsDecide the rail height — usually 1900-2000mm from the floor — and mark the two end points with a pencil. Use a spirit level to draw a level line between them. Check the rail length matches the gap, and lay out your tools: drill, spirit level, tape measure, masking tape, and screwdriver.

AB-02Work out what your wall is made ofTap the wall — a dull thud usually means solid brick or block, a hollow sound means plasterboard on a stud frame. If it's plasterboard, run a stud detector or a magnet across the wall to find the vertical line of screw heads holding the boards on. Drill a small 2-3mm pilot hole in an inconspicuous spot: fine timber dust means a timber stud, grey metal swarf means a metal stud frame, and if the drill drops through with no resistance after 12-15mm you likely have dot-and-dab. In older houses, a slightly springy, uneven surface behind the plaster can mean lath and plaster.

AB-03Check for cables and pipes before you drillCables and pipes can run almost anywhere, not just in the 'safe zones', so always use a detector — but treat it as a warning, not a guarantee. Detectors can miss cables that are deep, in metal conduit, behind metal-backed board, or confused by a metal stud frame. Find your stopcock (usually under the kitchen sink) and check it turns freely, so you can shut off the water fast if you hit a pipe. If you have any doubt at all, isolate the relevant circuit at the consumer unit before drilling, and turn off the water at the stopcock before drilling near any pipe run.
AB-04Mark and prepare the fixing pointsHold the bracket against the wall on your level line and mark the screw holes with a pencil. If the wall is tiled, put a strip of masking tape over the mark first — this stops the drill bit skating and helps prevent cracking. Use a small pilot drill bit to start the hole gently before switching to full size.

AB-05Fix into solid brick or blockDrill a 6-7mm hole to the depth stated on the wall plug packet, usually 30-35mm. Push in a wall plug flush with the surface, then drive the screw supplied with the bracket into the plug. Tighten until the bracket sits firm against the wall, but don't overtighten and crack the plug.

AB-06Fix into plasterboard on timber studsIf your marks land on a timber stud, drill a small pilot hole into the centre of the stud and drive a wood screw straight in — no plug needed. If a fixing point falls between studs, use a hollow-wall toggle or self-drilling plasterboard fixing rated for the bracket's load instead.

AB-07Fix into plasterboard on metal studsNever use a plain wall plug or an ordinary wood screw in a metal stud — it will strip straight through the thin steel. Use a self-drilling metal-stud fixing or a toggle-type hollow-wall anchor rated for the weight of the rail and a wet curtain. A shower rail is a light, static load, so a metal stud will usually cope, but if it feels loose or the metal is thin, fix into the timber noggin behind the shower area if one exists, or fit a small pattress between the studs first.

AB-08Fix into dot-and-dab plasterboardDot-and-dab has a gap of 20-40mm between the plasterboard and the masonry wall behind it. Use a long fixing — typically a 60-75mm frame fixing or a specific dot-and-dab anchor — that passes through the board, bridges the gap, and grips into the masonry behind. A standard short wall plug will only grip the plasterboard and will pull straight out under any pulling force.

AB-09Fix into lath and plasterLath and plaster is old, brittle plaster on thin timber strips, and it cracks easily. Drill a small pilot hole first to check you're not hitting a gap between laths, then use a long toggle fixing that opens out behind the laths, or find and screw into the timber lath or a stud behind if you can locate one. Work slowly and don't force the drill — sudden pressure can crack a large area of old plaster.

AB-10Fit the brackets and railScrew both end brackets to the wall using the fixing method for your wall type. Slot the rail into the brackets and check it's level with your spirit level. Tighten any grub screws or locking screws on the brackets to stop the rail rotating or sliding.
AB-11Finish and tidy upRun a thin bead of sanitary silicone around each bracket base if it sits within the shower's splash zone, to stop water tracking behind it. Hang the curtain and rings, wipe down the wall, and vacuum up any dust or debris. Leave silicone to cure for the time stated on the tube, usually 24 hours, before using the shower.
