Fit an L-shaped shower curtain rail to a timber stud wall

Plan, mark and fix an L-shaped shower rail level and secure, using the right fixing for your exact wall type.

SR-01Plan the layout and mark the heightDecide where the two straight sections and the corner bracket will sit, keeping the rail about 1900-2000mm from the floor so it clears your head. Hold the rail kit against the wall and mark the corner point and both end points in pencil. Check the run is square to the bath or shower tray, not just to the wall.

SR-02Work out what your wall is actually made ofRun a stud detector or a small magnet across the marked area. On a stud wall you'll feel a hollow sound between studs and a solid thud on the stud line, often lining up with a row of screw heads under the plasterboard. If you're not sure, drill a small 3mm pilot hole at a fixing point: pale dust means timber stud or masonry behind, fine grey swarf means a metal stud, and a soft, crumbly feel with no backing thud can mean lath and plaster or dot-and-dab. Metal stud walls are common in flats and anything built or refitted since the 1990s, so don't assume timber just because it's a stud wall.

SR-03Mark and level the fixing holesHold each bracket in place and mark its screw holes with a pencil through the fixing points. Use a spirit level along the top edge of the rail to check the whole run is dead level before you commit to any holes. Double-check the corner bracket lines up with both straight runs at 90 degrees.

SR-04Check for cables and pipes before you drillCables and pipes can run almost anywhere in a bathroom wall, not just in the obvious zones, so sweep every marked point with a detector. Even with a clear reading, treat the wall as if something is there until you prove otherwise — detectors miss cables that are deep, in metal conduit, behind metal-backed plasterboard, or outside the normal safe zones, and a metal stud frame can throw a cheap detector off completely. Find your stopcock now, usually under the kitchen sink, and check it turns freely so you can shut the water off fast if you hit a pipe. If you have any doubt at all, turn off the relevant circuit at the consumer unit and the water off at the stopcock before you drill.
SR-05Drill and fix the first straight sectionInto a timber stud, drill a 3mm pilot hole into the centre of the stud and drive in a 40-50mm wood screw straight through the bracket. Into a metal stud, don't use a wood screw or plastic plug — they strip straight through 0.5mm steel — use a self-drilling metal-stud screw or a toggle-type hollow-wall anchor rated for the rail's weight. Into solid brick or block, drill an 8mm hole 40-50mm deep, fit a matching wall plug, and use an 8mm x 60mm screw. Behind dot-and-dab plasterboard, use a fixing long enough to pass through the plasterboard, the adhesive dabs and the air gap to bite into the masonry behind, typically 75-90mm.

SR-06Fit the corner bracketRepeat the same drilling and fixing choice for the corner bracket, matching it to whatever wall type you found there — it can differ from the straight run if the corner sits on a different stud or a section of masonry. On a plasterboard-between-studs fixing point with no stud behind it, use a toggle or hollow-wall anchor rated for the rail's weight rather than a plain plug. On lath and plaster, drill carefully through the lime plaster and laths using a toggle fixing or, better, a longer screw fixed through to the masonry behind if you can locate it, since the laths alone won't hold a screw reliably.

SR-07Fit the second straight sectionFix the remaining bracket or brackets the same way, checking the wall type at each point rather than assuming it matches the first run. Offer the rail up before final tightening to confirm everything still lines up and sits level.
SR-08Attach the rail and tighten everythingClip or slot the rail sections into the fitted brackets as per the kit instructions. Tighten every screw fully, but don't overtighten plastic wall plugs or toggles as this can crack tiles or crush plasterboard. Run the spirit level along the finished rail one more time to check it's still true.
SR-09Fit the curtain rings and test the weightThread the shower curtain onto the rings or hooks supplied and hang it on the rail. Give the rail a firm downward and outward tug at several points to check it holds, since this is exactly the kind of pulling load that a bare metal-stud fixing without a toggle or noggin will fail under.

SR-10Seal any tile holes and tidy upIf you drilled through tiles, run a small bead of clear silicone sealant around any exposed hole edges to stop water getting behind the tile. Wipe down dust from the wall and floor and vacuum up any drilled debris straight away so it doesn't get trodden into grout lines.
