Fit a sliding barn door track to a dot-and-dab plasterboard wall

Fit a sliding barn door track safely by finding your wall type first and fixing through to solid backing wherever it's needed.

BD-01Plan the track height and lengthMeasure the door opening and choose a track at least twice the door's width so it clears the opening fully when open. Mark the top of the door frame, then check your kit's fitting guide for how much clearance to add above it for the rollers - usually around 20mm. The track's fixing line normally sits 30-50mm above that mark, but always follow the exact figure your kit gives you.

BD-02Gather your tools and check the kitLay out the track, brackets, rollers, floor guide and fixings and check nothing's missing. You'll need a drill, a mix of drill bits for masonry and timber, a spirit level and a cable/pipe detector. Have a dustpan or vacuum ready for the mess drilling makes.

BD-03Mark and level the fixing lineHold the track against the wall at your planned height and use a spirit level to get it dead straight. Mark through the fixing holes in the track, or its template, with a pencil. Check the line clears the door architrave and any light switches or sockets along its run.

BD-04Find your stopcock and check for cables before you drillCables and pipes can run almost anywhere in a wall, not just the 'safe zones' you might have read about. Run a detector along the marked line, but still drill your first hole gently and be ready to stop - detectors miss cables that are deep, in metal conduit, or behind metal-backed board, and a metal stud frame confuses cheap detectors further. Find your stopcock now, usually under the kitchen sink, and check it turns. If there's any doubt, isolate the circuit at the consumer unit before drilling, and turn off the water at the stopcock before cutting into anything that could carry water.
BD-05Work out what's behind your wallKnock along the wall - a dull, solid sound is brick, block, or a dab in dot-and-dab; an even hollow sound between knocks roughly every 400-600mm means a stud wall. Run a magnet along the surface: it grips directly onto a metal stud's steel face but not onto timber. Drill a small 3mm pilot hole - brick or block gives grey dust, timber gives pale wood dust, and a metal stud gives fine steel swarf. Dot-and-dab sounds mostly hollow with occasional solid patches every 300-450mm where the adhesive dabs sit, and lath and plaster feels slightly springy, with drilling bringing crumbly lime plaster then thin wood lath.

BD-06Fit backing where the wall alone can't take the loadA barn door track is heavy and pulls on the wall every time the door slides, so most walls need extra backing along the fixing line. On a timber stud wall, fix an 18mm plywood batten across at least three studs if your bracket spacing doesn't land on stud centres. On a metal stud wall, the stud alone will not hold this weight - fit a timber noggin or plywood pattress between the studs, screwed to the stud flanges, or better still fix through to the masonry behind if there is any. On dot-and-dab plasterboard, skip a backing board and fix straight through the board and the cavity into the masonry behind - this is the standard method for a load this heavy. On lath and plaster, locate the timber studs behind the laths and treat the fixing as timber stud. Solid brick or block needs no backing at all.

BD-07Drill and fix using the right fixing for your wallSolid brick or block: drill an 8mm hole 60mm deep, insert a wall plug and drive in the screw. Dot-and-dab: drill through the board and the cavity into the masonry behind, then use a long masonry frame fixing, around 120mm, so it bites into the solid masonry, not just the plasterboard skin. Timber stud, direct or through a backing board: drill a 3mm pilot hole into the centre of the stud and drive in a 60mm wood screw. Metal stud: use a self-drilling metal-stud screw or a toggle-type hollow-wall anchor rated for the load - never a plain plastic wall plug or an ordinary wood screw, which strips straight through 0.5mm steel. Lath and plaster: pilot through the plaster and lath into the stud behind, then fix as for timber. Go steady on the first hole at each fixing point in case a cable or pipe turns up where you didn't expect one.

BD-08Fix the track to the wallLift the track, or the backing board with the track already attached, into place and drive in the fixings, working along from one end. Check the track is still level every few fixings, as it can twist slightly under load. Tighten fully once you're happy it's straight.

BD-09Fit the floor guidePosition the floor guide directly below the track so the door runs through it without rubbing. Mark and drill for the floor fixing - a wall plug and screw for a solid floor, or a wood screw straight into a timber floor. Screw the guide down and check it's square to the door's swing.

BD-10Hang the door on the trackGet a second person to help - a barn door is heavy and awkward to lift alone. Lift the door and hook the roller carriages onto the track, then let it settle into place. Check there's a consistent gap of around 10mm between the door and the floor.
BD-11Level and adjust the running doorSlide the door back and forth and watch for binding or a gap that changes along its run. Most roller carriages have an adjustment bolt - use this to level the door and get an even gap top and bottom. Fit the end stops from the kit so the door can't run off the track.

BD-12Tidy upVacuum up all the dust and swarf from drilling, especially brick dust, which travels further than you'd think. Wipe down the track and door. Patch any unused test holes with a dab of filler and touch up the paint once dry.
