Fit a sliding barn door track to a metal stud wall

Fit a heavy-duty sliding barn door track safely, checking your wall type and adding solid backing before drilling.

BD-01Plan the job and gather your toolsMeasure your door opening. Barn door track is usually twice the width of the opening, so the door can slide fully clear. Check the track kit's weight rating — most home kits take doors up to 80-100kg, and a standard internal door is 20-40kg. Lay out your tools: drill driver, detector, 1200mm spirit level, tape measure and pencil.

BD-02Work out what your wall is made ofRun a detector along the marked line, or drag a magnet — screw heads under plasterboard pull the magnet in and reveal a repeating line, usually every 300-600mm. Tap the wall: a dull thud with no give is solid brick or block; a hollow sound is a stud wall or dot-and-dab. Drill a 3mm pilot hole at a fixing point — pale wood dust means timber studs, fine grey swarf means metal studs, and gritty red or grey dust means masonry. If the wall is old with a slightly springy, crumbly feel, you may have lath and plaster over timber studs.

BD-03Check for cables and pipes before you drillA detector helps but does not guarantee a clear spot — it can miss deep cables, cables in metal conduit, or anything behind metal-backed board, and a metal stud frame can confuse a cheap detector further. Find your stopcock first, usually under the kitchen sink, and check it turns freely, so you can shut off water fast if you hit a pipe. If you have any doubt, isolate the relevant circuit at the consumer unit before drilling, and turn off the water at the stopcock before cutting into any wall that could carry pipework.
BD-04Mark the track height and level lineMeasure your door height, add the gap needed under the door (usually 10-15mm) and the height of the track brackets from the kit instructions. Mark this point at both ends of the opening and check they are level with your spirit level, not just measured from the floor. Draw a full pencil line along the wall at this height — this is your fixing line, and it should now be marked over the stud positions you found in step 2.
BD-05Fit backing support behind the trackA metal stud on its own will not hold a barn door track. The door pulls sideways every time it slides, and 0.5mm steel will bend and tear over time. On metal studs, fix a length of 18mm exterior ply, at least 150mm wide and running the full length of the track, across the stud line using self-drilling metal stud screws (25mm) every 300mm. On timber studs, do the same if your bracket spacing does not land on stud centres (studs are usually 400-600mm apart); if it does line up, you can screw straight into the stud centres instead. On solid brick or block, no backing board is needed — fix directly into the masonry. On dot-and-dab, check the air gap behind the board (usually 20-50mm) and plan to use fixings long enough to pass through it into the masonry, or fit a backing board fixed through to the brick. On lath and plaster, locate the timber studs behind the laths and plan to fix through the plaster and lath into solid timber, not into the lath alone.

BD-06Drill your fixing holesPre-drill each marked point with a pilot hole sized for your wall: 3mm into timber or ply backing, no pre-drill needed for self-drilling metal stud screws, and the plug's stated drill size (usually 6-10mm) into solid masonry. Into dot-and-dab, drill through the plasterboard and the air gap into the masonry behind, then fit a plug long enough to reach solid brick. Blow or vacuum out dust from each hole before fixing.

BD-07Mount the trackHold the track against your marked line and check it is level along its full length before fixing anything. Screw through each bracket into the backing board, timber stud, or masonry plug, tightening evenly rather than fully tightening one end first. Check the level again once the last bracket is fixed, and re-check that every screw is tight — a loose bracket on a sliding door will work loose fast.

BD-08Fit the hangers and hang the doorFix the hanger plates to the top of the door, usually 40-50mm in from each edge — follow your kit's spacing exactly, as it affects how the door sits on the track. Lift the door onto the track wheels with a second person helping, then check it rolls smoothly along the full length. Fit the anti-jump discs supplied with the kit to stop the door lifting off the track, and fix the floor guide at the base to stop it swinging out.

BD-09Test, adjust and tidy upSlide the door fully open and closed several times, checking it runs smoothly and clears the floor by roughly 10-15mm. Adjust the hanger bolts if the door rubs or sits unevenly, and re-tighten any bracket screws that have worked loose. Vacuum up dust and swarf, wipe down the wall and door, and clear away offcuts and packaging.
