Fit a towel ring to a metal stud wall

Fit a bathroom towel ring safely, choosing the right fixing for metal stud, timber stud, brick, dot-and-dab, or lath and plaster walls.

AB-01Gather your tools and check the jobLay out your towel ring, drill, detector, spirit level, tape measure and pencil. Check the towel ring kit for the fixings supplied — often these are only right for stud walls, so you may need to buy separate wall plugs or toggles depending on your wall. Decide roughly where the ring will go before you start marking up.

AB-02Work out what your wall is made ofRun your detector over the area. A steady line of screw heads under plasterboard means timber studs; a continuous metal reading along a vertical strip means a metal stud track. Tap the wall — a dull, solid sound is brick or block, a hollow sound is plasterboard on studs or dot-and-dab. If unsure, drill a small 3mm test hole in an inconspicuous spot: pale wood dust means timber, fine grey swarf and a hard, gritty feel means metal, brick-red or grey dust with steady resistance means masonry, and a hollow gap after 10–40mm of board before hitting solid material means dot-and-dab. Lath and plaster feels soft and slightly crumbly, then meets thin wooden laths.
AB-03Check for cables and pipes, and know your isolation pointsCables and pipes can run almost anywhere, not just in the marked safe zones, so treat your detector as a first check, not a guarantee — it can miss cables that are deep, in metal conduit, behind metal-backed plasterboard, or confused by a metal stud frame. Find your stopcock now, usually under the kitchen sink, and check it turns freely so you can shut off water fast if you hit a pipe. If you have any doubt about what's behind the wall, isolate the relevant circuit at the consumer unit before drilling, and turn off the water at the stopcock before cutting into anything that could carry it.
AB-04Mark the position and check it's levelA towel ring is usually fitted around 1200mm from the finished floor, but check what suits your bathroom and existing fittings. Hold the ring's baseplate against the wall, use a spirit level to get it true, then mark the fixing hole centres with a pencil through the plate or template. Put a strip of masking tape over tiles at the mark to stop the drill bit skating.
AB-05Drill through tiles if fitting over a tiled wallStart with a tile bit at low speed and no hammer action, keeping steady light pressure until you're through the glaze and tile. Once through the tile, switch to the correct bit and setting for the wall material behind — masonry, timber or metal — before continuing the hole.

AB-06Fixing into solid brick or blockDrill with a masonry bit and hammer action, using a bit sized to match your wall plug — commonly 6mm or 7mm — to a depth of 35–40mm. Blow out the dust, tap in the wall plug flush with the surface, then drive the screw through the ring's baseplate into the plug.

AB-07Fixing into plasterboard on timber studsConfirm the stud centre with your detector, then drill a 2mm pilot hole to stop the timber splitting. Drive a wood screw at least 40mm long straight into the centre of the stud through the baseplate. Do not rely on plasterboard alone between studs for a towel ring — always aim for solid timber.

AB-08Fixing into plasterboard on metal studsNever use a plain plastic plug or an ordinary wood screw in a metal stud — they strip straight through 0.5mm steel. Use a self-drilling metal-stud fixing, or a toggle-type hollow-wall anchor rated for the weight, driven into the steel track itself. A towel ring is light, so a good-quality metal-stud fixing is normally enough, but if the ring will take real pulling force, such as someone leaning on it, fit a timber noggin or metal pattress between the studs first.

AB-09Fixing into dot-and-dab plasterboardDot-and-dab plasterboard sits 10–40mm off the solid wall behind it on adhesive dabs, so a standard plug won't reach anything solid. Use a long fixing, typically 60–75mm, that passes through the board's void and anchors into the masonry behind — a long frame fixing or a suitable long toggle. Drill slowly and check depth as you go so you don't punch straight through into a cable or pipe run behind.

AB-10Fixing into lath and plasterLath and plaster is thin timber strips under an old plaster coat, and it's brittle — over-tightening a fixing can crack the surrounding plaster. Use a spring toggle or similar hollow-wall anchor that spreads the load across the laths rather than a single point. Fit it gently and don't overtighten the screw once the toggle is in place.

AB-11Fit the ring and check it holdsScrew the baseplate to your chosen fixing, checking with the spirit level as you tighten. Fit the ring onto the baseplate and secure any grub screw or cover cap. Hang a towel and pull gently on the ring to check it's solid before relying on it.
AB-12Tidy upVacuum drilling dust from the floor and windowsill, and wipe down tiles with a damp cloth. If you removed any silicone sealant near the ring, reseal any gaps to keep the area watertight. Put fixings and offcuts away, and dispose of packaging.
