Fit a towel ring to a timber stud wall

Fit a towel ring securely to your bathroom wall in one session, checking what's behind it and using the right fixings.

TR-01Check the ring and gather your toolsUnpack the towel ring and check the fixing centres on the backplate — most are 40-60mm apart. Get a pencil, spirit level, tape measure, drill, screwdriver, and a dust sheet for the bath or floor below. Check the screws supplied with the ring — cheap ones are often too short or too soft, so keep proper wood screws or wall plugs to hand as a backup.

TR-02Check for pipes and cables, and know your stopcockRun a cable and pipe detector over the wall before you mark anything, but don't trust it completely — detectors miss cables that are deep, in metal conduit, or behind metal-backed plasterboard, and bathrooms often have hidden pipework for a shower or basin. Find your stopcock (usually under the kitchen sink) and check it turns freely, so you can shut the water off fast if you hit a pipe. If you have any doubt about what's behind the wall, isolate the electrics at the consumer unit before drilling.
TR-03Work out what your wall is made ofTap the wall — a dull, solid sound usually means brick, block, or dot-and-dab plasterboard over masonry; a hollow sound means a stud wall or lath and plaster. Use a detector or magnet to find studs, then check the spacing — timber studs are usually 400mm or 600mm apart, metal studs often the same. Drill a small pilot hole in an inconspicuous spot: timber dust means a wood stud, fine grey swarf means metal.
TR-04Mark and level the positionHold the ring where you want it — a common height is around 1000-1200mm from the floor, but check it feels right for your household. Use a spirit level to mark the fixing holes level with each other, then double-check the spacing matches the backplate exactly.
TR-05Solid brick or block wall (including through tiles)If drilling through tiles, start with a tile bit at slow speed with no hammer action until you're through the glaze, then switch to a masonry bit and hammer setting for the wall behind. Drill a 6mm hole to a depth of about 30-35mm, insert a matching wall plug, and drive in the screw. This gives a solid, permanent fixing for a small item like a towel ring.

TR-06Timber stud wallIf your marks land on a timber stud, drill a small pilot hole (around 2mm) into the centre of the stud to stop the screw splitting the wood. Drive a wood screw (around 6 x 40mm) straight into the stud through the backplate. This is the strongest fixing you can get on a stud wall, so use it whenever the position allows.

TR-07Metal stud wallNever use a plastic wall plug or ordinary wood screw on a metal stud — it will strip straight through the 0.5mm steel. Use a self-drilling metal-stud fixing or a toggle-type hollow-wall anchor rated for at least the weight of a full towel. A towel ring is light, so a fixing straight into the metal stud (not just the plasterboard either side) is ideal if one lines up with your marks.

TR-08Plasterboard between studs (no stud behind the fixing)If neither hole lands on a stud, use plasterboard toggles or spring toggles rated for at least the weight of a wet towel plus someone leaning on the ring — treat it as a pull-away load, not just a static one. Drill a hole sized to the toggle (often 8-10mm), push the toggle through, and tighten to draw it flush against the back of the board before fitting the ring.

TR-09Dot-and-dab plasterboard wallDot-and-dab has a gap of 20-50mm between the plasterboard and the masonry behind it, so a short fixing will just sit in fresh air. Use a long fixing — a dot-and-dab specific anchor or a long masonry plug and screw (often 70-80mm) that passes through the board and bites into the solid wall behind. Drill slowly and check the depth as you go so you don't punch straight through the mortar joint.

TR-10Lath and plaster wallLath and plaster is old timber laths under plaster, and it's brittle — drill slowly to avoid cracking the surface around the hole. If you hit a lath (timber), a short wood screw into it can work for something this light; if you're between laths, use a plasterboard-style toggle sized for the plaster thickness, and go gently when tightening so you don't crack the surrounding plaster.

TR-11Fit the ring and tightenScrew the backplate to the wall using the fixings for your wall type, then check it's sitting level. Attach the ring itself following the manufacturer's instructions, and tighten every screw fully — a loose backplate will work itself free with regular use.
TR-12Test and tidy upHang a damp towel on the ring and pull gently to check the fixing holds without moving. Wipe away any dust, vacuum up drill debris, and dispose of any old fixings you removed. If you drilled through tile, check for hairline cracks around the hole.
