Fit wire supports for climbing plants to a timber fence or shed
Fit horizontal wires with vine eyes to a fence or shed post so your climbing plant has something sturdy to grow up.
CW-01Plan your wire layoutDecide how many horizontal wires you need — usually 3, spaced 300-400mm apart, with the lowest around 300mm off the ground. Mark each fixing point with a pencil on the posts, using a spirit level to keep the lines straight and a tape measure to keep spacing even along the run.
CW-02Check the fence or shed is soundPush and wobble the posts and panels to see if the structure is solid. Press a screwdriver point gently into the timber — if it sinks in easily or crumbles, the wood is rotten. A mature climbing plant gets heavy over a few years, so don't fix wires to timber that's already failing.
CW-03Work out what you're actually fixing intoSolid fence posts and shed corner posts take a screw-in fixing well on their own. Thin featheredge or shiplap boards do not — fix through them into the horizontal rail or stud behind, not into the board alone. For a brick or block garden wall, or a brick-built shed, look for mortar lines and tap the surface: masonry sounds dull and solid, timber sounds hollow.
CW-04Check for cables before you drillA plain timber fence rarely has cables in it, but a shed with lighting or a socket fitted can have cables run inside the timber or along the wall. Use a cable and pipe detector on every fixing point near shed electrics, and still treat the area as live until you've proved otherwise. If there's any doubt at all, turn the circuit off at the consumer unit before drilling. For a garden wall or brick shed, check there's nothing obviously buried behind the fixing point first.
CW-05Drill pilot holes in timberFor solid posts or rails, drill a 2-3mm pilot hole at each marked point, about 30mm deep — slightly narrower than the screw thread on your vine eye. This stops the timber splitting as you screw in. Wear safety glasses while drilling overhead or at eye level.
CW-06Fit vine eyes into the timberScrew each vine eye into its pilot hole, using pliers through the eye for extra grip if it's stiff. Drive it in straight until the eye sits flush against the wood. Where you're fixing through a thin board, make sure the screw thread is biting into the rail behind, not just the board.

CW-07Fit fixings into masonry (if applicable)If any run of wire crosses a brick or block wall instead of timber, drill with a 6mm masonry bit to about 35mm deep, insert a wall plug, then screw in a vine eye or eye bolt rated for outdoor use. Skip this step entirely if your whole run is on timber fence posts or a timber shed.
CW-08Thread and tension the wireWearing gloves, thread galvanised wire through each vine eye along the row. Pull it tight by hand and twist it back on itself at one end. For longer runs, fit a straining bolt at one end instead so you can tension the wire properly as the plant grows heavier.

CW-09Finish the wire endsTwist each wire end back around itself at least three times so it can't slip loose. Cut off any sharp offcuts with wire cutters and tuck the ends in close to the eye, so nothing sticks out to snag skin, clothing or the plant's stems.
CW-10Tidy up and train the plantSweep up wire offcuts and screws so nothing's left in the grass. Coil and store any leftover wire and spare vine eyes for next time. Loosely tie in the first stems of your climbing plant to the wires with soft garden twine, leaving room for them to thicken as they grow.
