Fit batten-supported alcove shelves to a metal stud wall

Fit sturdy alcove shelves on battens, checking your wall type first so every fixing holds safely and level.

AB-01Measure the alcove and mark shelf heightsAlcoves are rarely square, so measure the width at the top, middle and bottom with a tape measure and note the narrowest point — that sets your shelf depth for a snug fit later. Mark your chosen shelf height on the back wall, then use a spirit level to carry that line onto both side walls. Repeat for every shelf you're fitting, spacing them at least 250mm apart if you want to fit books or boxes underneath.

AB-02Work out what each wall is made ofCheck the back wall and both side walls separately — they're often different, especially if one side is a chimney breast. Tap the wall along your marked line: a dead, solid sound means brick or block, a hollow drum sound means plasterboard on a stud or dot-and-dab. Run a stud detector or a magnet along the line, looking for a regular pattern of screw heads about 400mm or 600mm apart to confirm a stud wall, then drill a small pilot hole in a spot the shelf will cover — fine white dust means masonry or plasterboard, timber dust means a timber stud, and fine grey swarf means a metal stud.

AB-03Check for cables and pipes before you drillCables and pipes can run almost anywhere in a wall, not just in the tidy zones people expect, and a cheap detector can miss cables that are deep, in metal conduit, behind metal-backed board, or confused by a metal stud frame. Run the detector over every fixing point but still assume something could be there until you've proved otherwise. Find your stopcock — usually under the kitchen sink — and check it turns freely before you start. If you have any doubt at all, isolate the relevant circuit at the consumer unit before drilling, and turn the water off at the stopcock before cutting into anything that could carry a pipe.
AB-04Cut the support battensCut one batten to the back wall's width minus a 3mm gap for wriggle room, and two side battens to your chosen shelf depth. Use 25x38mm PSE softwood batten — plenty strong for shelving loads. Cut squarely with a panel saw or mitre saw and lightly sand the cut ends.

AB-05Fix the back batten to the wallHold the batten on your marked line and check it's level, then fix it according to what step AB-02 told you. Solid brick or block: drill 6mm holes 40mm deep, insert a wall plug, and use a 50mm woodscrew every 300-400mm. Timber stud: drive a 60mm woodscrew through the batten and plasterboard into the centre of each stud, with at least two fixings across the batten's length. Metal stud: use a self-drilling metal-stud screw where a stud lands under the batten — never a plain wall plug or wood screw, which strips straight through 0.5mm steel — and use a toggle-type hollow-wall anchor rated for the shelf's load anywhere the batten falls between studs. Dot-and-dab: drill through carefully with a long masonry bit first to find the depth of the air gap behind the board, then use dot-and-dab frame fixings at least 75-90mm long to reach the solid wall behind. Lath and plaster: this surface is brittle and springy, so locate the timber studs behind the laths and screw into those only, spacing fixings so the batten spans at least two studs to spread the load.

AB-06Fix the side battensAlcove side walls are often solid brick or block, especially either side of a chimney breast, but check yours as in AB-02 — it might be a stud wall instead. Fix each side batten using the matching method from AB-05, working from the back corner outwards and checking level with a spirit level as you go. Space fixings at roughly 300mm along the length of each side batten.

AB-07Check the battens are level and packed if neededLay the spirit level across from the back batten to each side batten and check both directions. If a wall bows and leaves a gap behind the batten, slide a thin timber packer behind it before fully tightening the fixings, so the batten doesn't rock. Re-check level once every fixing is fully tightened.

AB-08Cut the shelf board to fitWith the battens up, measure the actual gap at shelf height in at least three places — walls are rarely parallel. Transfer these measurements to your board using a straight edge and pencil, then cut with a jigsaw or fine-tooth handsaw, aiming for a snug fit with about a 2mm gap each side. Sand the cut edges smooth.

AB-09Finish the shelf before fittingFill any exposed MDF edges with edge filler or an iron-on veneer strip if you want a neat finish, then sand smooth once dry. Paint or varnish the shelf in your chosen finish and let it dry fully — check the tin for drying time — before moving on.

AB-10Fit and secure the shelfOnce the finish is fully dry, lower the shelf onto the three battens and check it sits flat and level. For a lightweight shelf, this fit is often enough on its own. For anything carrying real weight, drive a short countersunk screw down through the shelf into each batten from above so it can't be knocked off.

AB-11Clear up and check the jobVacuum plaster and masonry dust from the alcove floor and battens, and wipe down the shelf and walls. Bag up offcuts for disposal and wash out any paintbrushes. Give the shelf a final wobble test by hand before loading it up.
