Fit batten-supported alcove shelves to a dot-and-dab plasterboard wall

Fit level, sturdy shelves in an alcove using a batten frame, fixed correctly whatever each wall is made of.

AS-01Plan the job and measure the alcoveDecide on shelf height and measure the alcove width at the top, middle and bottom — alcoves are rarely perfectly square, so use the smallest measurement for your shelf length. Clear the area below and lay down a dust sheet. Check you have all tools and fixings before you start drilling.

AS-02Work out what each wall is made ofAn alcove has three faces and they can all be different — check each one separately. A dot-and-dab wall sounds hollow and the tap tone changes over the vertical dabs, spaced roughly every 150-300mm. Plasterboard on timber studs sounds hollow between studs and solid on the stud; plasterboard on metal studs is thinner-sounding still, and a magnet or detector will pick up the line of screw heads fixing the board to the frame. A small pilot hole tells you the rest — pale wood dust means timber, fine grey swarf means metal, and dense resistance with no dust means solid brick or block. Lath and plaster walls feel slightly springy and the plaster is thinner and more brittle than modern plasterboard.

AS-03Check for cables and pipes before you drillCables and pipes can run almost anywhere, not just in the 'safe zones'. Use a detector, then still assume something could be hidden — detectors miss deep cables, cables in metal conduit, anything behind metal-backed plasterboard, and metal studs confuse cheaper detectors. Find your stopcock now, usually under the kitchen sink, and check it turns freely so you can shut the water off fast if you hit a pipe. If you have any doubt at all, isolate the relevant circuit at the consumer unit before drilling, and turn the water off at the stopcock before cutting into anything that could carry water.
AS-04Mark the level line for the shelfHold your spirit level against the back wall at the height you want the shelf and draw a level pencil line across the full width. Carry the line round onto both side walls using the level, not by eye. Double-check all three lines meet at the same height in the corners before drilling anything.

AS-05Fix the back support batten into dot-and-dabCut a length of 34x18mm timber batten a few mm shorter than the alcove width. On dot-and-dab, the plasterboard is stuck to the masonry with foam dabs, leaving a gap of roughly 10-40mm behind the board — a normal wall plug will spin loose in that gap. Use a long fixing (typically 75-90mm) that passes through the plasterboard and gap and grips at least 30mm into the solid masonry behind, such as a frame fixing or a dot-and-dab-rated hollow wall anchor. Drill pilot holes, offer the batten up to your level line, and screw it home checking level as you go.

AS-06Fix the side battens — method depends on the wallSide walls often differ from the back wall, so check each one with the method from step AS-02 before drilling. On solid brick or block, drill 45mm deep with a 6mm bit, insert a wall plug, and fix with a 50mm screw. Into a timber stud, drive a 45mm wood screw straight into the centre of the stud you've located. Into a metal stud, never use a plain plastic plug or an ordinary wood screw — it strips straight through 0.5mm steel; use a self-drilling metal-stud screw or a toggle-type hollow wall anchor instead. On lath and plaster, drill a small pilot hole to stop the brittle plaster cracking and fix into the timber stud behind the laths, not into the laths themselves, which won't hold a screw on their own. If the shelf will carry real weight and you only have metal stud or thin plasterboard to fix into, fit a timber noggin between the studs first, or fix through to the masonry behind — a metal stud alone will not hold a heavy, loaded shelf.

AS-07Cut the shelf board to sizeMeasure the alcove again at shelf height, along the front edge and at the back — walls are rarely parallel. Mark the cut line on your shelf board using the smaller measurement so it fits without forcing. Cut with a handsaw or circular saw, then sand the cut edge smooth.

AS-08Fit the shelf onto the battensLower the shelf board onto the three battens and check it sits level with a spirit level, packing gently with card if one corner is slightly out. Drill small pilot holes down through the top of the shelf into each batten, roughly every 200mm. Fix with screws short enough that they don't punch through the underside of the shelf.

AS-09Finish the shelf and screw holesFill any visible screw heads or gaps with a suitable filler and let it dry fully. Sand smooth once dry, then paint, varnish or wax to match the rest of the room. Leave to dry fully before loading the shelf.

AS-10Tidy upVacuum up dust and off-cuts from the floor and skirting. Wipe down the shelf and surrounding wall. Store or dispose of any leftover fixings and timber off-cuts safely.
