Fit festoon light hooks to a timber fence or shed

Screw weatherproof hooks into solid fence or shed timber, then hang and test outdoor festoon lights safely.

FH-01Plan the hook positionsWalk the run and decide where the lights will go - along a fence top rail, across a shed wall, or between two fixed points. Space hooks every 500-750mm so the cable droops gently rather than pulling tight. Mark each position with a pencil at a consistent height, allowing for the natural sag of the cable between hooks.

FH-02Check for cables and pipes before you drillIf the shed has mains power - a light, socket, or extension lead run through the timber - use a cable detector along your marked line, but still treat it as if a cable could be there even after checking; detectors can miss cables in conduit or behind timber cladding. If there's any doubt, isolate the circuit at the consumer unit before drilling. If an outdoor tap or hose pipe runs near your fixing points, know where your stopcock is (usually under the kitchen sink) so you can shut the water off fast if you hit anything.

FH-03Work out what you're actually drilling intoFence posts and arris rails, and shed corner posts and mid-rails, are solid timber (usually 35-45mm thick) and take a screw eye well. Overlap or shiplap cladding boards are often only 8-12mm thick on their own and will pull straight out. Tap the surface - a dull thud means solid timber behind it, a hollow rattle means thin cladding, so move your mark until you're over a solid rail or post.
FH-04Drill pilot holes and fit the screw-in hooksDrill a pilot hole at each mark, sized slightly smaller than the screw eye's shank, about two-thirds of the eye's length deep. Use zinc-plated or stainless steel screw eyes rated for outdoor use. Screw each one in by hand or with a screwdriver bar through the eye, turning until it's fully seated and tight. If it spins without gripping, the timber is rotten or too thin - reposition onto solid wood.

FH-05Add a support wire for long runsFor any span over about 3m, don't rely on hooks alone - the weight and wind sag can slowly pull them out. Fit a heavier-duty eye at each end into solid posts, run a length of stainless steel tension wire between them, and clip the lights to the wire instead of directly to intermediate hooks.

FH-06Hang the festoon lightsStarting from one end, loop or clip the cable through each hook, leaving a little slack so wind can move the lights without straining the fixings. Keep the plug end near a covered outdoor socket, and avoid the cable rubbing against sharp edges of fence panels or shed corners.

FH-07Connect the power and testPlug the festoon lights into an outdoor, RCD-protected socket rated for outdoor use. If you don't already have a suitable outdoor socket and need one installed, that's notifiable electrical work under Part P - get a registered electrician to do it or notify building control. Switch on and check every bulb lights before you pack up.

KNOW THE RULES

Fitting a new outdoor socket or fixed wiring is notifiable work under Part P of the Building Regulations. Plugging lights into an existing outdoor socket is not.

FH-08Tidy upCoil any spare cable and secure it with cable ties every 300mm so it isn't hanging loose. Check each hook is tight and the lights aren't pulling on any single fixing point. Clear away the ladder and tools, and bin any packaging.
