Fit slatted airing cupboard shelves to a metal stud wall

Fit slatted shelves in an airing cupboard by fitting battens to the wall first, then screwing the boards on top.

AC-01Clear the cupboard and check the tankTake everything out of the airing cupboard, including any old shelves. Look at where the hot water cylinder, pipework and any immersion heater cable run, so you know what to avoid later. Vacuum out dust and cobwebs so you can see the wall surface clearly.
AC-02Measure and mark shelf heightsMeasure the full height and width inside the cupboard, then decide how many shelves you want and the gaps between them. Leave at least 25mm clearance under each slatted shelf so air can still reach the cylinder. Mark a level line for each shelf with a pencil and spirit level, then check every mark twice before you drill anything.

AC-03Work out what the wall is made ofAiring cupboard walls can be solid brick or block, timber stud, metal stud, dot-and-dab plasterboard, or old lath and plaster, and the right fixing changes for each one. Run a magnet or stud detector across the wall: a steady line of screw heads under plasterboard marks a stud, and the sound changes from hollow to solid over it. Drill a small pilot hole at a marked fixing point: pale wood dust means a timber stud, fine grey metal swarf means a steel stud, and immediate solid, dusty resistance means brick or block. Hollow everywhere with no regular stud pattern, and a gap before a hard blob behind the board, means dot-and-dab; old lath and plaster feels slightly springy and sounds like thin wooden strips knocking rather than a flat board.

AC-04Check for pipes, cables and your stopcock before you drillCables and pipes can run almost anywhere in a wall, not just in the marked 'safe zones', and a detector can miss anything deep, in metal conduit, or behind metal-backed board — a metal stud frame can also confuse cheap detectors. Find your stopcock, usually under the kitchen sink, and check it turns freely before you start, so you can shut the water off fast if you hit a pipe. If you have any doubt at all, turn off the relevant circuit at the consumer unit before drilling, and turn off the water at the stopcock before cutting into anything that could carry it.
AC-05Fix the support battens to the wallCut a 44x21mm timber batten to length for each marked shelf line and hold it steady on the level mark. Into solid brick or block, drill a 6mm hole 40mm deep, insert a wall plug and drive a 50mm screw. Into a timber stud, drive a 50mm wood screw straight into the centre of the stud; into a metal stud, use a self-drilling metal-stud fixing or a hollow-wall toggle made for steel, never a plastic plug or an ordinary wood screw, as these strip straight through 0.5mm steel. Where a batten falls on plasterboard between studs, use a toggle rated for at least twice the loaded weight of wet towels; for dot-and-dab, use a fixing long enough to pass through the dab and bite into the masonry behind; for lath and plaster, aim for the timber laths or a joist rather than trusting the plaster alone. A metal stud on its own will not carry a heavily loaded shelf long-term — if the cupboard will hold a lot of linen, fit a timber noggin between the studs first, or fix through to the masonry behind.

AC-06Cut the slatted shelf boards to lengthMeasure the inside width of the cupboard at each shelf height, as older cupboards are rarely perfectly square. Mark and cut slatted shelf panels to fit using a hand saw or jigsaw, then sand the cut edges smooth. Dry-fit each panel onto its battens before fixing anything permanently.

AC-07Screw the slats onto the battensRest each slatted panel on its battens and check it sits level. Drive a 30mm screw down through each slat into the batten beneath, spacing the fixings evenly so the panel can't rock. Don't overtighten, as thin slats can split if screws are driven too hard.

AC-08Load test, check level and tidy upPush down firmly on each shelf and check nothing flexes or pulls away from the wall. Recheck every shelf is level with a spirit level and adjust before loading it with towels or linen. Vacuum up all dust and offcuts, and dispose of any sharp cut edges safely.
