Fit slatted airing cupboard shelves to a dot-and-dab plasterboard wall

Fit slatted shelves inside your airing cupboard safely and securely in one session, with clear steps from start to finish.

AC-01Clear the cupboard and check the spaceTake everything out of the cupboard, including old shelves or slats. Check nothing inside — pipework, an immersion heater, or the hot water cylinder — sits close to the wall you plan to drill. Give the space a quick vacuum so you can see what you're working with.
AC-02Plan your shelf heights and mark themDecide how many shelves you want and space them roughly 250-300mm apart, leaving room for folded towels or bedding. Mark a level line for each shelf on the back wall using a spirit level, then carry the marks onto the side walls if your slats will rest on brackets both sides. Double-check every line is level before you drill anything.

AC-03Work out what's actually behind the plasterboardAn airing cupboard often has one dot-and-dab wall on the outside face and a timber or metal stud partition on the inside. Don't assume — check each wall separately. Tap along the wall: dot-and-dab and stud walls both sound hollow, but dot-and-dab feels solid an inch or so in when you press, because it's bonded to brick or block behind.
AC-04Identify timber vs metal studs on any partition wallIf a wall isn't dot-and-dab, run a magnet or stud detector across it to find a vertical line of screw or fixing heads — timber studs are usually 400mm or 600mm apart. Drill a 3mm pilot hole at your marked point: timber dust means a timber stud, fine grey swarf means a metal stud. Metal stud frames are common in flats and anything built or refitted since the 1990s, so don't assume timber just because the wall feels the same.

AC-05Check for cables and pipes, and find your stopcockCables and pipes can run almost anywhere, including up into an airing cupboard wall to feed a cylinder or immersion heater. Sweep the whole fixing area with a detector, but treat it as a guide, not a guarantee — detectors miss deep cables, cables in metal conduit, anything behind metal-backed plasterboard, and they get confused by metal stud frames. Before you drill, find your stopcock (usually under the kitchen sink) and check it turns freely, so you can shut the water off fast if you hit a pipe. If you have any doubt, isolate the circuit at the consumer unit first, and turn the water off at the stopcock before cutting into anything that could carry water.

AC-06Fix the first support batten to solid brick or blockIf the wall is solid masonry with no plasterboard, drill with a 6mm masonry bit to 45mm depth, matching the length of a wall plug and screw. Insert a Rawlplug-type plug and drive in a 50mm wood screw so it sits flush. Space fixings at least every 400mm along the batten.

AC-07Fix into dot-and-dab plasterboardOn a dot-and-dab wall, drill through the plasterboard and the air gap into the solid masonry behind — this is usually 40-50mm deep in total, so use a fixing at least 75-90mm long to get a solid grip in the brick or block, not just the board. Standard wall plugs are too short here; use a long fixing rated for cavity plus masonry, sold as a frame fixing or long masonry screw. Drill a pilot hole first to check depth before committing to the final hole.

AC-08Fix into a timber stud partitionOnce you've confirmed a timber stud at your marked point, drill a 3mm pilot hole through the plasterboard into the centre of the stud. Drive a 50-60mm wood screw straight in — no plug needed, timber grips the screw thread directly. If your batten spacing doesn't line up with a stud, add a support bracket fixed to the nearest stud instead of relying on plasterboard alone.

AC-09Fix into a metal stud partitionNever use a plain wall plug or an ordinary wood screw in a metal stud — the screw strips straight through 0.5mm steel and the shelf will fail. Use a self-drilling metal-stud screw driven directly through the plasterboard into the steel channel, or a toggle-type hollow-wall anchor if you're fixing between studs into the board itself. A metal stud will not hold real weight or anything that pulls away from the wall as it's used — for a loaded airing cupboard shelf, it's safer to fix through to the masonry behind if there is any, or fit a timber noggin between the studs first.

AC-10Fix into lath and plasterLath and plaster is older and more fragile than plasterboard — press gently first, as it can crack or crumble around a fixing. Drill through to find the timber laths behind, then use a long screw into a lath or, better, into the timber stud behind it if you can locate one. Where you can't hit solid timber, use a proper plasterboard/lath-rated hollow-wall fixing rather than forcing a plug into crumbling plaster.

AC-11Level and fit the second batten or bracket setRepeat the drilling and fixing method for your wall type on the opposite side or back wall, using your spirit level marks from earlier. Check the second batten lines up level with the first before fully tightening every screw. A slightly-off shelf will make items slide, so take the extra minute here.
AC-12Cut and fit the slatted shelvesMeasure the width of the cupboard at each shelf height, as older cupboards are rarely perfectly square. Cut the slatted shelf panels to fit using a hand saw or jigsaw, sanding any rough cut edges. Rest each panel on its battens or brackets and check it sits flat with no rocking.

AC-13Test the load and tidy upPress down firmly on each shelf and check nothing flexes, creaks loose, or pulls away from the wall. Load them gradually with towels or linen over the next day or two rather than piling everything on at once, so you'd notice early if a fixing was struggling. Vacuum up dust and off-cuts, and dispose of any plaster or masonry debris in your general waste.
