Hang a garden mirror on a rendered exterior wall

Fix a garden mirror securely to a rendered wall, drilling into the solid masonry behind, then seal the holes against weather.

GM-01Choose the spot and check the renderPick a spot away from downpipes, airbricks, meter boxes and overhanging plants. Tap the render lightly with a knuckle across the area — a dull, hollow sound or a crumbly feel means loose or blown render that won't hold a fixing, so move over until you hit a solid, sharp-sounding patch. Hold the mirror (or a cardboard template the same size) against the wall to check the height and position before you mark anything.

GM-03Check for cables and pipes, and know your shut-offsRun a detector over the whole area first, but treat it as a warning system, not proof — cables and pipes can run almost anywhere, and detectors miss anything deep, in metal conduit, or outside the usual safe zones. Before you drill, find your stopcock (usually under the kitchen sink) and check it turns freely, so you can shut the water off fast if you ever hit a pipe. If you have any doubt about what's behind this wall, isolate the relevant circuit at the consumer unit before drilling, and don't drill at all until you're confident.

GM-04Mark and level the fixing pointsHold the mirror's hanging plate or D-rings against the wall at the height you want and mark the screw positions through the fixing holes with a pencil. Use a spirit level to check the marks are level with each other before you drill — it's much harder to correct once there are holes in the render.

GM-05Drill through the render into the masonryDrill each mark on a non-hammer setting first, just to get through the render layer — hammer action straight away can crack or blow the render around the hole. Once you're through the render (typically 10-15mm), switch to hammer/percussion mode and drill on into the brick or block behind to the full depth needed for your plug, usually 50-60mm. Drill straight and steady, and pull out every few seconds to clear dust rather than forcing through.

GM-06Fit the wall plugsBrush or vacuum the dust out of each hole — a dusty hole gives a weak fixing. Push a red heavy-duty wall plug (8mm) into each hole and tap it flush with the wall using a hammer, so it sits level with the render surface, not standing out or sunk below.

GM-07Screw the mirror to the wallDrive a 6mm x 60mm screw into each plug, leaving the head standing about 8-10mm off the wall if the mirror hangs from D-rings or a wire, or driving it flush if it goes through a fixed plate. If the render surface is uneven, slip a washer or packer behind the screw head so the mirror sits flat and doesn't rock. Hang the mirror and check it's level and firmly seated.

GM-08Seal the fixing points against waterRun a small bead of exterior-grade silicone sealant around each screw head and along any gap where the hanging plate meets the wall. This stops rain tracking into the drill holes, which can freeze in winter and crack the render around the fixing over time.

GM-09Final check and tidy upGive the mirror a firm, steady pull test from a few angles to make sure it doesn't shift. Sweep or vacuum up render dust and offcuts from the ground below, and put your tools away.
