Hang a heavy picture or large canvas on a metal stud wall

Work out your wall type, pick the correct fixing, then hang a heavy picture safely and level.

HPW-01Plan the job and gather your toolsDecide where the picture is going and roughly how high — eye level is usually about 1500mm to the centre of the picture. Check the frame's hanging hardware (wire, D-rings or mirror plates) so you know how many fixing points you need and how far apart they are. Lay everything out before you start so you're not hunting for tools halfway through.

HPW-02Work out what your wall is made ofRun an electronic detector or a small magnet slowly across the wall at the height you're fixing. A magnet that grabs onto a line of screw heads roughly 300–600mm apart means metal studs behind plasterboard. Tap the wall — solid brick or block sounds dull and dense everywhere, while stud walls sound hollow between the upright supports and solid on them. If you're still unsure, drill a small 2–3mm pilot hole in an inconspicuous spot: timber studs give pale wood dust, metal studs give fine grey metal swarf, and brick or block gives red or grey dust.

HPW-03Mark your hanging height and fixing pointsDraw a level line at your chosen height using the spirit level, not by eye. Hold the frame's hanging hardware against the wall (or measure the wire's stretched width) and transfer the fixing points onto your line. Double-check the spacing matches the frame exactly — a few millimetres out will make the picture hang crooked.

HPW-04Check for cables and pipes before you drillCables and pipes can run almost anywhere in a wall, not just in the 'safe zones' people assume. Sweep the area again with your detector, but treat it as a warning, not a guarantee — detectors miss cables that are deep, in metal conduit, behind metal-backed plasterboard, or confused by a metal stud frame. Find your stopcock now (usually under the kitchen sink) and check it turns freely, so you can shut the water off fast if you hit a pipe. If you have any doubt at all, isolate the circuit at the consumer unit before drilling.
HPW-05Fixing into solid brick or blockDrill with a masonry bit sized to your wall plug — typically 6mm for light-duty plugs, 8mm for a heavier picture — to a depth of at least 40–50mm. Push in a wall plug flush with the surface, then drive in a screw (usually 50–75mm) leaving 8–10mm standing out to catch the hanging wire or mirror plate. Brick and block will comfortably hold a heavy picture or canvas — this is usually the strongest wall type you'll fix into.

HPW-06Fixing into plasterboard on timber studsOnce you've confirmed a timber stud with your detector or pilot hole test, drill a 2.5mm pilot hole into the centre of the stud to stop the screw wandering or splitting the timber. Drive a wood screw (50–60mm) straight into the stud — no plug needed. This gives a strong, reliable fixing for a heavy picture, as good as brick if you hit the centre of the stud.

HPW-07Fixing into plasterboard on metal studsNever use a plain wall plug or an ordinary wood screw here — they strip straight through 0.5mm steel and won't hold. Use a self-drilling metal-stud fixing or a toggle-type hollow-wall anchor rated for your picture's weight, following the pack instructions for pilot hole size. A metal stud on its own will not reliably hold a genuinely heavy picture or large canvas that pulls on the wall — if in doubt, fix into the plasterboard between the studs with a heavy-duty toggle rated for the weight, or ask a tradesperson about adding a timber noggin behind the board, which is a bigger job than this guide covers.

HPW-08Fixing into dot-and-dab plasterboardDot-and-dab walls have a gap of roughly 10–40mm between the plasterboard and the solid masonry behind, held together with blobs of adhesive. Drill a small test hole first to measure this gap, then use a long frame fixing or cavity fixing sized to pass through the board and gap and bite into the masonry behind — usually 75–100mm long. A fixing that only grips the plasterboard, not the masonry, will eventually pull out under a heavy picture's weight.

HPW-09Fixing into lath and plasterThis older plaster is brittle and sits on thin timber laths, so drill slowly with a small pilot hole to avoid cracking a large area. Where possible, locate a solid timber lath or the stud/joist behind it and screw into that. If you can only fix into the plaster itself, use a purpose-made plaster fixing rather than a plasterboard toggle, and keep the load light — lath and plaster is generally weaker than the other wall types, so consider a lighter picture here if you have a choice.

HPW-10Fit the hanging hardware to the frameScrew D-rings or mirror plates to the back of the frame, roughly a third of the way down from the top, or fit picture wire between two D-rings pulled reasonably taut. Make sure the screws you use to fix the hardware to the frame are the right length for the frame's thickness — too long and they'll poke through the front.

HPW-11Hang the picture and check it's levelLift the picture onto the fixings and let it settle naturally. Check it with a spirit level across the top or bottom edge, and adjust the wire or the frame's position slightly if it's off. Give it a firm push from the side to check it doesn't shift or feel loose on the wall.
HPW-12Tidy up and check the fixingVacuum or brush up drilling dust from the floor and skirting. Wipe the wall down if there's any plaster dust marking it. Come back after a day and check the fixing hasn't moved or the wall hasn't cracked around it, especially on plasterboard or lath and plaster.
