Hang a punchbag from a lath and plaster ceiling

Fix a punchbag safely by spreading its load across ceiling joists, never trusting lath and plaster alone to hold it.

PB-01Decide if your ceiling can take a punchbagA lath and plaster ceiling on its own cannot hold a swinging punchbag — the plaster is just a decorative finish and it will crack or pull away under load. The real support has to come from the timber joists above it, spread across at least two or three of them. Measure up and, if you can get into the loft, check the joist size — thin joists (75x50mm) at wide spacing may not cope with a heavy dynamic load. If you're at all unsure, or the bag is heavier than about 30kg, consider a free-standing punchbag frame or a wall bracket fixed through to solid masonry instead.

PB-02Gather your tools and materialsGet everything ready before you start so you're not up and down the ladder. You'll need a stud/joist detector, a drill with wood bits, spanners, and the fixing kit for the ceiling plate. Lay dust sheets nearby, ready for the next step.

PB-03Clear the room and set up safelyMove furniture and anything breakable well clear of the work area. Lay dust sheets under where you'll be drilling — lath and plaster produces a lot of fine, gritty dust. Set your stepladder on a firm, level base directly under the fixing point, and move the ladder rather than overreaching.
PB-04Find the joists and check for hidden servicesRun a detector across the ceiling near your marked spot and look for a line of nail or screw heads in the plaster, which usually marks a joist. Before you drill anything, find your stopcock — usually under the kitchen sink — and check it turns, so you can shut off the water fast if you hit a pipe. Cables and pipes can run almost anywhere in a ceiling, and detectors miss ones that are deep, in conduit, or hidden behind old lath, so if there's any real doubt, isolate the circuit at the consumer unit before you drill.
PB-05Check whether you have timber or steel above the plasterLath and plaster ceilings are almost always fixed to timber joists; steel ceiling joists only turn up in modern steel-frame or loft-conversion work, and wouldn't normally carry old lath and plaster. Drill a small pilot hole at your marked point and check what comes out: pale timber dust means a timber joist, and you can carry on. Fine grey metal swarf means a steel joist — stop, and use a self-drilling or toggle-type metal-frame fixing rated for the load, never an ordinary wood screw or plastic wall plug, which will strip straight through thin steel.
PB-06Check from the loft if you can get up thereIf your loft is accessible, go up with a torch and find the same joists from above — it's much easier to see exactly what you're dealing with. Push a thin drill bit or bradawl down through your pilot hole so you can spot it poking through in the loft, confirming exactly where each joist runs. This also lets you fit a backing plate or large washer on top of the joists later, spreading the load even further.

PB-07Mark out and cut the spreader plateCut a piece of 18mm exterior-grade plywood roughly 600x400mm to span at least three joists. Hold it up to the ceiling, mark through it where each joist centre falls, then drill clearance holes for M10 coach bolts at those points. This plate spreads the punchbag's load across several joists instead of relying on the plaster or a single fixing point.

PB-08Bolt the plate through the joistsDrill through the plate, the plaster and lath, and right through each joist at your marked points, using a bit sized for M10 coach bolts. Push each bolt through from below, then get into the loft and fit a large washer and nut on top of each joist, tightening firmly but not over-hard on the old plaster. This leaves the plate sitting flush against the ceiling, with all the load now carried by the joists, not the plaster.

PB-09Fit the eye bolt and hangerDrill a pilot hole in the centre of the plate and screw in a heavy-duty eye bolt rated well above the bag's weight — punchbag impacts load a fixing far harder than its static weight suggests. Attach a swivel to the eye bolt, then the chain, so the bag can turn slightly without twisting the fixing. Check every connection is done up tight before moving on.

PB-10Load-test before you hang the bagHang a heavy dead weight, close to the punchbag's own weight, from the chain and leave it for a few minutes. Check the plate for any movement, and look in the loft for any sign of the joists lifting or the bolts pulling through. If everything holds solid, you're ready to hang the real bag; if you see any movement or cracking, take the weight off and get a builder to check the joists before going any further.
PB-11Hang the bag and tidy upClip the punchbag onto the swivel and set the height so its centre sits at roughly your own solar plexus. Vacuum up all the plaster dust and swarf, and fill and sand any test holes you drilled in the ceiling. Give the fixing a final tug test before proper use, and check it again after your first few sessions, since a new fixing can bed in slightly.
