Hang cube or box shelves on a dot-and-dab plasterboard wall

Find your wall type, pick the right fixings, then mark, drill and hang box shelves level and secure.

CS-01Gather your tools and materialsGet everything ready before you start: shelf unit and its fixings, spirit level, detector, drill/driver, masonry and wood drill bits, pencil, tape measure and a dust sheet. Lay a dust sheet under the work area to catch dust and debris. Check the shelf's fixing holes and any bracket that comes with it before you start marking the wall.

CS-02Work out what your wall is actually made ofEven if you think this is a dot-and-dab wall, check first. Knock along the wall: a consistent hollow sound over a wide area with occasional firmer patches roughly every 300mm is dot-and-dab (plasterboard glued to masonry with blobs of adhesive). A steady hollow sound with a line of screw heads every 400-600mm means a stud wall instead. Check the wall thickness at a socket or door reveal — dot-and-dab is usually thicker than solid masonry alone. If it's a stud wall, sweep a magnet or detector along a vertical line: regular metal hits every 400-600mm suggest studs behind, and a small pilot hole will bring out pale timber dust for wood or fine grey swarf for metal. Older houses with wavy walls and a slightly springy feel under knuckle taps may be lath and plaster.

CS-03Check for cables and pipes, and know your safety cut-offsCables and pipes can run almost anywhere in a wall, not just in the usual straight lines above sockets. Use a detector, but don't trust it completely — detectors can miss deep cables, cables in metal conduit, cables behind metal-backed plasterboard, and a metal stud frame will confuse a cheap detector further. Before you drill, find your stopcock (usually under the kitchen sink) and check it turns properly, so you can shut the water off fast if you hit a pipe. If you have any doubt at all, isolate the circuit at the consumer unit before drilling, and turn the water off at the stopcock before cutting into anything that could carry water.
CS-04Plan and mark the shelf positionsDecide on the height and spacing of your shelves and mark a light pencil line using the spirit level. Hold the shelf or bracket against the wall and mark through the fixing holes exactly, rather than measuring separately, to avoid mistakes. Double-check the marks are level before you drill anything — it's much easier to fix now than after the holes are made.

CS-05Drill and fix into dot-and-dab plasterboardTap gently around each marked point to find a dab (a firmer, less hollow sound) and aim your fixing there if you can — it gives a much stronger hold than fixing into an air gap. Drill through the plasterboard and dab into the masonry behind, using a fixing long enough to bridge the gap — typically 60-75mm to reach solid brick or block through the plasterboard and adhesive. Mark the drill bit with tape at the right depth so you don't go in too far. If a hole lands in a void with no dab behind it, don't just use a longer plug — switch to a proper dot-and-dab fixing (a long hollow-wall anchor designed to bridge the cavity) instead.

CS-06Different wall? Use the right fixing insteadSolid brick or block: drill with the correct size masonry bit for your plug (check the plug packet), to the right depth, and use a standard wall plug and screw. Plasterboard on timber studs: fix a wood screw straight into the centre of the stud, using a pilot hole first. Plasterboard on metal studs: never use a plain plastic plug or an ordinary wood screw — it will strip straight through 0.5mm steel. Use a self-drilling metal-stud fixing or a toggle-type hollow-wall anchor made for metal studs instead. Metal studs will not hold anything heavy, or anything that pulls away from the wall in use — a full shelf load spread across the wall may be fine with the right fixings, but if you're in any doubt, fit a timber noggin between the studs or fix through to the masonry behind. Fixing into plasterboard between studs (not on a stud): use a toggle or hollow-wall anchor rated for the weight you're hanging. Lath and plaster: drill slowly with a fine bit to avoid cracking the plaster, and where possible fix into the timber studs or joists behind the laths rather than the plaster itself, since laths alone won't hold much weight.

CS-07Fit the fixings and offer up the shelfPush or tap plugs fully home, then drive the screws in until firm — don't overtighten, as this can crush plasterboard or strip a metal stud fixing. Offer the shelf or bracket up to the wall and check every fixing point lines up cleanly before tightening fully. If anything feels loose or spins without gripping, stop and re-check which wall type you're actually dealing with.
CS-08Hang the shelf, check level and load testHang the shelf onto its fixings or brackets and re-check it with the spirit level, adjusting if needed. Press down firmly on the shelf by hand before loading it properly, to check the fixings hold under pressure. Add items gradually rather than all at once, especially on a dot-and-dab or stud wall.
CS-09Tidy upVacuum dust from the floor and wipe down the wall. Fill any misplaced or spare pilot holes with a dab of filler, leave to dry, and sand smooth. Put drill bits, plugs and tools away so they're ready for next time.
