SHELVING & STORAGE

Hang cube or box shelves on a metal stud wall

Plan, mark and fix box shelves securely and level, checking your wall type and using safe drilling practice throughout.

SH-01Gather tools and clear the wallClear the area below the wall and move furniture out of the way. Get your spirit level, tape measure, pencil, drill/driver, stud detector, and the fixings for your wall type. Wear safety glasses when drilling.

SH-02Mark shelf positions and check for levelHold a shelf up at the height you want and pencil-mark the top edge. Use a spirit level to draw a level line across the wall for each shelf. Mark the fixing hole positions on the line, matching your shelf's bracket spacing.

SH-03Work out what's behind the wallRun a stud detector or magnet along the wall to find the vertical studs behind the plasterboard. A line of screw heads roughly every 400-600mm confirms stud spacing. Drill a small 3mm pilot hole at a fixing mark: fine, pale dust means timber; grey metallic swarf means a metal stud; a solid, dense feel with brick-coloured dust means solid masonry behind the board (or straight into brick or block if there's no plasterboard at all). A hollow, bouncy feel with plasterboard dust only, and nothing behind for 30-50mm, usually means dot-and-dab or a stud gap. Uneven, crumbly plaster with a hollow tap and thin wood laths glimpsed in the hole means lath and plaster - treat fixing points carefully as the laths are old and can crack.

SH-04Check for cables and pipes, and know your isolation pointsA detector helps but can miss cables that are deep, in metal conduit, or behind metal-backed plasterboard, and metal studs confuse cheap detectors further. Before drilling, find your stopcock (usually under the kitchen sink) and check it turns freely, so you can shut off water fast if you hit a pipe. If you have any doubt about what's behind the wall, isolate the relevant circuit at the consumer unit before drilling near sockets or switches, and turn off the water at the stopcock before drilling anywhere a pipe could run.
RULES
KNOW THE RULES

Part P covers notifiable electrical work in England and Wales, but simply isolating a circuit before drilling near it is a safety precaution, not notifiable work itself.

SH-05Choose the right fixing for your wallFor a metal stud, use a self-drilling metal-stud fixing or a toggle-type hollow-wall anchor rated for the shelf's loaded weight - never a plastic wall plug or an ordinary wood screw, which will strip straight through 0.5mm steel. For a timber stud, use a wood screw driven into the centre of the stud, at least 40mm into the timber. For plasterboard between studs (timber or metal), use a plasterboard toggle or hollow-wall anchor rated for the weight. For solid brick or block, drill to the plug's stated diameter and depth and use a suitable wall plug and screw. For dot-and-dab plasterboard, use a fixing long enough to pass through the plasterboard, the adhesive dabs and air gap, and bite into the masonry behind - typically 60-75mm. For lath and plaster, fix into a timber stud where possible; if fixing into the laths only, use a plasterboard-style toggle rated for the load, as laths crack under screw pressure alone.

4 each · Wood screws 4x40mm
1 pack · Rawlplug and screw kit (masonry)
4 each · Long masonry screw 75mm (dot-and-dab)
SH-06Drill and fit the fixingsDrill each hole to the size stated on the fixing packet, keeping the drill level and steady. For metal studs, drill a pilot hole first if the fixing is self-drilling, or the exact size stated for a toggle. Push or screw the anchor in fully, then wind in the shelf bracket screw so the anchor grips tight against the back of the board or stud.
SH-07Hang the shelf and check it's level and secureHook or screw the shelf onto its fixings and check it's level with the spirit level. Give it a firm push and pull test before loading it - it should not flex, creak or pull away from the wall. If it moves at all, remove it and refit with a stronger fixing or into a stud.
SH-08Repeat for remaining shelves and tidy upFit any further shelves the same way, checking each is level with the others using a long spirit level or a straight edge across them. Vacuum up dust and swarf from the floor and windowsills. Wipe down the wall and put tools away.
1 each · Dustpan and brush or vacuum
