Put up a wall-mounted clothes rail on a metal stud wall

Plan the position, work out what's behind the wall, then fit a level clothes rail using fixings suited to that wall.

AB-01Plan the height and positionDecide where the rail goes and mark the height with a pencil dot — 1600-1700mm from the floor works for most adults. Use a spirit level to draw a level line the full length of the rail. Check nothing blocks the rail's swing, like a door or window opening.

AB-02Find your stopcock and clear the work areaBefore you drill anything, find your stopcock — usually under the kitchen sink — and check it turns freely. This means you can shut the water off fast if a drill or screw ever hits a pipe. Clear the floor below your work area and lay down a dust sheet.

AB-03Mark the fixing centresHold the rail brackets against your level line and mark each screw hole through the bracket, or measure and mark the bracket centres if fitting brackets separately from the rail. Most rails need two or three brackets depending on length — add a middle bracket for anything over 900mm.
AB-04Work out what's behind the wallRun a stud detector or magnet along the wall at your marked height. A line of screw heads roughly every 400-600mm, or a hollow sound when you knock between them, means plasterboard on studs. Tap the wall — solid brick or block sounds dull and dense with no hollow spots. Drill a small pilot hole at one mark: timber dust means timber studs, fine grey swarf means metal studs, and a dull grinding with brick dust means solid masonry. Old horizontal ridges under a soft, uneven plaster surface usually mean lath and plaster. Detectors miss cables that are deep, in metal conduit, behind metal-backed plasterboard, or simply outside the usual safe zones — and a metal stud frame can confuse a cheap detector further. Always expect a cable or pipe could be there and drill carefully, stopping the moment you feel resistance or see anything other than dust. If you're in any doubt, isolate the circuit at the consumer unit before drilling, and know your stopcock is ready in case you hit water.

AB-05Fixing into solid brick or blockDrill straight into the brick or block using a masonry bit sized to your plug — typically 6mm or 8mm — and drill 5mm deeper than the plug length to allow for dust. Blow out the dust, tap in the plug flush with the wall, then drive in the screw. Use at least a 50mm screw so it bites well into solid masonry, not just the plaster skim.

AB-06Fixing into plasterboard on timber studsWhere a bracket lands over a timber stud, drill a 3mm pilot hole in the centre of the stud and drive in a wood screw — 40-50mm long is enough to pass through the plasterboard and bite well into the timber. Fixings landing between studs, over plasterboard only, need a plasterboard toggle or hollow-wall anchor rated for the rail's likely load, not a plain wall plug.

AB-07Fixing into plasterboard on metal studsWhere a bracket lands over a metal stud, use a self-drilling metal-stud anchor or screw made for steel — never a plain wall plug or an ordinary wood screw, which strips straight through 0.5mm steel. For fixings between studs, use a metal-rated hollow-wall toggle, not a standard plasterboard toggle. A clothes rail gets pulled and yanked constantly as clothes go on and off, and a metal stud fixing alone often isn't strong enough for this repeated pull — for a rail that will take real daily use, fit a timber noggin or plywood pattress between the studs before fixing, or fix through to any masonry behind. This means opening a small section of plasterboard, screwing a noggin between the studs, then patching the board back — worth the extra time for a fixing you'll trust.

AB-08Fixing into dot-and-dab plasterboardDot-and-dab has a gap of 10-40mm between the plasterboard and the masonry behind, held on with blobs of adhesive rather than a full backing. Use a long fixing that passes through the plasterboard, the gap, and into the masonry — typically 75-90mm screws with matching wall plugs, sized to your drill bit. Drill slowly and check the fixing feels solid once it's through into the brick or block, not just gripping the dab.

AB-09Fixing into lath and plasterOld lath and plaster is thin, brittle plaster on narrow timber laths and crumbles easily around a screw. Find the timber studs behind the laths with your detector, then use a wood screw into the stud centre as with a timber stud wall. For fixings that fall between studs, use a heavy-duty toggle fixing rated for uneven, older plaster, and drill pilot holes slowly to avoid cracking the surface.

AB-10Fit the brackets and hang the railScrew each bracket in place, checking your level line as you go. Tighten all fixings fully but don't overtighten toggles or anchors, which can crack the board. Rest the rail in the brackets and secure it with any locking screws the bracket set includes.
AB-11Load test and tidy upHang a few heavy items on the rail and pull down and outward firmly to check nothing moves or creaks. Wipe down the wall and rail, sweep or vacuum up dust and debris, and put drill bits and fixings away. If you patched any plasterboard for a noggin, leave the filler to dry fully before painting over it.
