Mount a fixed or tilting TV bracket on a lath and plaster wall

Plan, drill and fit a TV bracket safely, checking what's behind the wall before choosing how to secure it.

LP-01Check your TV and pick the right bracketWeigh your TV or check the manual, and measure the VESA hole pattern on the back. Buy a bracket rated for that weight with some margin to spare, and decide between fixed, tilting or full-motion — a full-motion arm pulls away from the wall and needs a much stronger fixing behind the plaster. Lay tools and materials out on a dust sheet before you start.

LP-02Mark the position and heightHold the bracket against the wall at your planned viewing height and use a spirit level to draw a level line. Mark the screw hole centres through the bracket with a pencil. Check the TV won't cover a socket or light switch, and that there's room for cables to run away neatly. Do not drill yet.

LP-03Work out what's really behind your lath and plasterMost lath and plaster partition walls are nailed to timber studs spaced roughly 400-600mm apart; some older solid walls have lath and plaster fixed to battens over brick or block, with an air gap behind. Run your detector across the marked area and tap gently — a firmer, duller sound usually means timber behind, a hollow, springy sound means an empty bay. Drill one small 3mm pilot hole at a corner of the marked area: timber dust confirms a stud, a hard stop further in suggests masonry behind battens, and fine dust with no solid stop at all means you're over an empty bay. If you get fine grey steel swarf instead of dust, this isn't timber-framed lath and plaster — stop and see LP-08.
LP-04Check for cables and pipes, then drill your fixing holesBefore drilling, find your stopcock (usually under the kitchen sink) and check it turns fully, so you can shut off the water fast if you ever hit a pipe. Sweep the whole marked area with your detector, but treat it as a guide, not a guarantee — detectors miss deep cables, cables in metal conduit, and anything hidden by old lath and plaster's own nails and mesh. If you have any doubt, isolate the circuit at the consumer unit before drilling, and turn off the water at the stopcock before cutting into any wall that could hide a pipe. Drill your fixing holes to the size set out for your wall type in the next steps, stopping every 10mm to check the dust and how much resistance you feel.
LP-05Fix into a timber stud behind the plasterUse a 6 x 75mm wood screw, or a coach screw for a heavier tilting bracket, driven into the centre of the stud through a 3mm pilot hole so the old timber doesn't split. Drive it slowly so it draws the plaster and lath tight to the timber without cracking the surface. If the plaster crumbles around the screw head, back it out and fit a wider washer to spread the load.

LP-06Fix through to solid masonry behind battensIf your pilot hole met a hard stop a few centimetres in, you have masonry behind timber battens. Drill straight through the plaster, lath and air gap into the brick or block with an 8mm masonry bit, then fit a sleeve anchor around 70-90mm long so it grips the solid masonry, not the crumbly lath. Use a thick washer or spacer to take up the air gap so the bracket sits flat and tight against the wall.

LP-07No stud or masonry lines up? Don't rely on a plasterboard-style toggle aloneA hollow-wall toggle can hold a light, fixed bracket in old lath and plaster if nothing solid lines up, but the plaster is brittle and can crack under load — never use a toggle alone for a tilting or full-motion arm, or for any TV over about 15kg. Instead, open a small inspection hole, fit a timber noggin or plywood pattress screwed between the studs either side, then patch the plaster and fix into that. If that's too much for one session, shift the bracket sideways slightly until a bolt lines up with a stud instead.

LP-08If it turns out you don't actually have lath and plasterFine steel dust from your pilot hole means a metal stud partition, not lath and plaster — use a self-drilling metal-stud fixing or a toggle rated for metal, never a wood screw or plastic wall plug, which strips straight through 0.5mm steel. A hollow sound with no nail line and a smooth board face usually means plasterboard on dot-and-dab; drill through the dab and the 45-75mm air gap into the masonry behind, using a fixing long enough to reach at least 30mm into solid brick or block. Either way, anything heavier than a fixed bracket, or any arm that pulls away from the wall, still needs a noggin, pattress, or a fixing through to solid masonry — a stud or dab alone won't hold it.

LP-09Level, tighten and checkFit the bracket over the fixings, add washers if specified, and tighten each bolt or screw fully before moving to the next. Hold your spirit level across the bracket again — old lath and plaster can shift slightly as fixings bed in. Give the fitted bracket a firm push in each direction to check nothing flexes or crumbles before you hang the TV.

LP-10Hang the TV, tidy cables, and clear upLift the TV onto the bracket with a second person if it's a large screen, and check the locking mechanism clicks or the arm holds firmly before letting go. Route cables down the wall with clips or a cable cover, keeping clear of any spot you've marked as hiding a cable or pipe. Sweep up plaster dust and offcuts, fold away the dust sheet, and dispose of old fixings safely.
