Put up a floating shelf on a timber stud wall

Fix a floating shelf securely, checking your wall type, safety and the right fixing before you drill.

FS-01Plan the job and gather your toolsDecide where you want the shelf and check it clears any socket, switch or door swing nearby. Work out the load you expect to put on it — books are heavier than they look — and choose a bracket or fixing kit rated for that weight. Gather your tools before you start so you're not hunting for them mid-job.

FS-02Work out what your wall is made ofKnock along the wall where the shelf will go: a dull, solid knock means brick or block; a hollow, drum-like sound means plasterboard on a stud wall or dot-and-dab; a springy, uneven knock usually means lath and plaster, common in houses built before the 1950s. If it's a stud wall, run a magnet or stud detector along the surface to find the line of screw heads fixing the board to the frame — this marks the stud centres, usually 400mm or 600mm apart. Drill a small 2mm test hole near a stud: pale wood dust means a timber stud, fine grey swarf means a lightweight steel stud, common in flats and anything built or refitted since the 1990s.

FS-03Mark your fixing points and level the lineHold the bracket against the wall at your chosen height and mark the top edge in pencil, checking it's level with a spirit level. Mark each fixing hole centre through the bracket. On a stud wall, shift the marks slightly so each fixing lands in the centre of a stud rather than its edge — a fixing near the edge of a 38mm stud can split the timber or miss it altogether.
FS-04Check for cables and pipes before you drillSweep the area with a cable and pipe detector first, then still assume something could be there and drill carefully — cheap detectors miss cables that are deep, in metal conduit, behind metal-backed plasterboard, or hidden by a metal stud frame. Before you drill, find your stopcock (usually under the kitchen sink) and check it turns, so you can shut the water off fast if you hit a pipe. If you have any doubt at all, isolate the circuit at the consumer unit before drilling, and turn the water off at the stopcock before cutting into anything that could carry water.

FS-05Fixing method: solid brick or blockDrill with a masonry bit sized to match your plug — typically an 8mm bit for an 8mm plug — to a depth of about 55mm, 5mm deeper than the plug, so dust has somewhere to go. Push in a wall plug rated for masonry, then drive a 60mm screw through the bracket into the plug. Brush out drilling dust as you go so the plug seats fully and grips.

FS-06Fixing method: plasterboard on timber studsDrill a 3mm pilot hole into the centre of the marked stud, angled straight, to stop the screw splitting the timber. Drive a 4mm x 50mm wood screw through the bracket into the pilot hole until it's snug — don't overtighten, or you'll strip the hole. Timber studs give a strong, direct fixing, so you don't need a wall plug here.

FS-07Fixing method: plasterboard on metal studsNever use a plain plastic plug or an ordinary wood screw on a metal stud — it strips straight through the 0.5mm steel and won't hold. Use a self-drilling metal-stud fixing or a toggle-type hollow-wall anchor rated for the load, driven straight into the centre of the stud on a low drill speed. A metal stud alone won't safely hold a heavy shelf or anything that pulls away from the wall as it's used — for that, fit a timber noggin between the studs first, or fix through to the masonry behind if there is one.

FS-08Fixing method: dot-and-dab plasterboardDot-and-dab plasterboard is stuck to the brick or block behind with dabs of adhesive, leaving a gap of 10-40mm behind the board, so your fixing needs to reach right through the board and the gap into solid masonry. Use a long fixing — typically 75-90mm — with a plug rated for this depth, and drill slowly so you don't punch through into the gap without support. If you're unsure how deep the gap is, test on a hidden spot first.

FS-09Fixing method: lath and plasterLath and plaster walls have narrow timber laths nailed to studs set at wider, less even centres than modern stud walls, so find a solid stud behind the laths by tapping for the change from hollow to solid, or with your detector. Drill a small pilot hole and drive a wood screw into the stud timber, just as you would on a timber stud wall — never rely on the laths or plaster alone, as they crack and pull away under load. If you can't find a stud close to your marked position, fit a timber batten across two studs first, or move the shelf to line up with one.

FS-10Fit the bracket and check it's levelFit all fixings loosely before you tighten any one fully, so you can nudge the bracket square if needed. Check the bracket is level and sits flush against the wall, then tighten every fixing fully. Slide the shelf onto the bracket and check it sits level and doesn't rock.
FS-11Load-test and tidy upPress down firmly on the shelf and check it doesn't move or creak before loading it properly. Wipe away dust or pencil marks, and vacuum up drilling dust from the floor and skirting. Add your items gradually rather than all at once, especially on a metal stud or dot-and-dab fixing.
