AB-03Check for cables and pipes before you drillCables and pipes can run almost anywhere in a wall, not just in the usual zones near sockets and switches. Run a detector along your whole fixing line, but still assume something could be there — detectors miss deep cables, armoured cable, anything in metal conduit, cables behind metal-backed plasterboard, and a metal stud frame confuses cheaper detectors even more. Before you drill, find your stopcock (usually under the kitchen sink) and check it turns freely, so you can shut off the water fast if you hit a pipe. If you have any real doubt, isolate the circuit at the consumer unit first.
