Put up a floating shelf on a metal stud wall

Fit a floating shelf securely on any wall type, using the correct fixing so it won't pull free.

SH-01Clear the wall and gather your toolsMove furniture away from the wall below where you're working and lay a dust sheet to catch screws and dust. Get your drill, spirit level, tape measure, pencil and detector together before you start. Check you have the shelf, bracket rail and the right fixings for your wall type.

SH-02Find your stopcock and consumer unitBefore you drill anything, find your stopcock (usually under the kitchen sink) and check it turns freely. Also find your consumer unit and work out which switches feed the room you're working in. Knowing both means you can act fast if you hit a pipe or cable.
SH-03Mark the shelf position and level lineHold the shelf or bracket rail against the wall at the height you want and mark a level line with a spirit level and pencil. Mark the centre points where each fixing will go, spacing them evenly along the rail. Double check the line is level before drilling anything.

SH-04Work out what your wall is made ofRun a magnet or stud detector along the marked line. Regular screw heads under plasterboard mean a stud wall; check whether it's timber or metal. Tap along the wall: a dull thud is solid brick or block, a hollow sound with occasional solid points is a stud wall, and a hollow sound everywhere behind a thin skin is often dot-and-dab. Drill a small 3mm pilot hole at one fixing point: timber dust means a timber stud, fine grey swarf means a metal stud, and solid resistance with brick dust means masonry. A bouncy feel with fine cracks, usually in a pre-1930s house, points to lath and plaster.

SH-05Check for cables and pipes before you drillCables and pipes can run almost anywhere in a wall, not just in the 'safe zones'. Sweep your detector over every marked fixing point, but still treat the wall as if something is there until you've proved otherwise. Detectors miss cables that run deep, sit in metal conduit, hide behind metal-backed plasterboard, or sit outside safe zones, and a metal stud frame can confuse cheap detectors further. If you have any doubt at all, isolate the relevant circuit at the consumer unit before drilling, and be ready to turn off the water at the stopcock if you're drilling anywhere near pipework.
SH-06Fix into solid brick or blockDrill each fixing point with a 6mm masonry bit to a depth of at least 40mm, using hammer action if the wall is dense block. Blow out the dust, insert a 6mm wall plug, then drive in a suitable screw. Repeat for every marked point along the rail.

SH-07Fix into plasterboard on timber studsPosition the rail so at least one fixing point lands in the centre of a timber stud, confirmed by your earlier pilot hole test. Drive a 4mm x 50mm wood screw straight into the centre of each stud. For any fixing points that fall on plasterboard between studs, use a toggle fixing rated for the shelf's weight rather than a plain screw.

SH-08Fix into plasterboard on metal studsThis is the usual setup in flats and anything built or refitted since the 1990s. Never use a plain wall plug or an ordinary wood screw on a metal stud — it will strip straight through the thin steel. Where a fixing point lands on a stud, use a self-drilling metal-stud screw or fixing. Where a point falls on plasterboard between studs, use a metal toggle or hollow-wall anchor rated for the shelf's weight.

SH-09Add a noggin if the shelf is heavy or metal studs alone won't doA metal stud will not hold serious weight, and it will not hold anything that pulls away from the wall as it's used, such as a long shelf loaded with books or ornaments near the front edge. If your shelf is heavy or deep, stop and fit a timber noggin between the studs, or fix through to the masonry behind, before continuing. A carpenter or handyperson can fit a noggin in under an hour if you'd rather not open the wall yourself.

SH-10Fix into dot-and-dab plasterboardDot-and-dab plasterboard is bonded to the masonry behind with adhesive dabs, leaving a gap that's often 10mm to 40mm deep. For a light shelf on solid adhesive contact, a plasterboard fixing rated for the load can work, but for a secure floating shelf it's best to drill through the plasterboard and the gap and into the masonry, using a fixing long enough to go at least 40mm into solid brick or block — typically 75mm to 100mm overall.

SH-11Fix into lath and plasterLath and plaster is common in houses built before the 1930s, and feels bouncy with fine cracks around old fixing points. Don't fix into the plaster alone — locate the timber studs or joists behind with your detector and pilot hole test, and drive a long screw into solid timber. Where you must fix between timbers, use a fixing designed for weak or crumbly backgrounds, and consider a thin plywood pattress behind the rail if the plaster feels loose.

SH-12Fit the bracket rail and shelfScrew the bracket rail to the wall using the fixings for your wall type, checking with a spirit level as you go that it stays dead level. Slide the shelf onto the brackets and push it fully home against the wall. Give it a firm push and a gentle downward pull to check nothing moves.

SH-13Load test and tidy upRest a light item on the shelf first and check for any sagging or movement before loading it fully. Wipe down the shelf and surrounding wall, vacuum up dust and screws, and remove the dust sheet. Fold flat and store any leftover fixings for later use.
