Put up a twin-slot shelving system on a lath and plaster wall

Fit twin-slot shelving safely by checking what's really behind your wall first, then choosing the right fixing for a secure, level result.

TS-01Plan the layout and gather your toolsDecide where the shelves will go and how much weight they'll carry — books need stronger fixings than a few ornaments. Measure the wall and lightly pencil-mark the top height and the width you're working with. Lay out your tools and materials before you start so you're not hunting for things mid-job.

TS-02Find your stopcock and check for pipes and cablesBefore any drilling, find your stopcock — usually under the kitchen sink — and check it turns, so you can shut the water off fast if you hit a pipe. Run a detector over the whole fixing line, but don't trust it completely: detectors miss deep cables, cables in metal conduit, and anything hidden behind old lath and plaster's own metal-mesh patches. If you have any doubt at all, isolate the relevant circuit at the consumer unit before drilling, and treat every hole as if something could be behind it until you've drilled slowly enough to prove otherwise.

TS-03Work out what's actually behind the plasterLath and plaster feels slightly springy when you press it, and a fine pilot hole brings out old lime-plaster dust and small splinters of wood lath, sometimes with a whiff of horsehair. Solid brick or block behind plaster sounds dead and solid when you knock it, with no give at all, and a pilot hole brings out brick or mortar dust. Plasterboard feels flatter and sounds hollow between fixings; tapping along it and watching for even screw-head lines under old paint tells you if it's on studs. If you find studs, check whether they're timber or metal: a magnet or detector tracking a line of screws, a hollow sound between them, and a pilot hole giving timber dust rather than fine grey steel swarf tells you which. Metal studs are common in flats and anything built or refitted since the 1990s, so don't assume timber just because the wall is a stud wall.
TS-04Mark and level the fixing lineHold the first upright against the wall at the height you want and use the spirit level to draw a true vertical line, not just one that looks straight. Mark the screw positions on the upright itself, usually every 300–400mm, and transfer these onto the wall through the slots. Repeat for the second upright, checking both are level with each other using a level laid across the wall.

TS-05Fix into lath and plaster over timber studsDrill a small pilot hole through the plaster and lath into the centre of the timber stud behind — old lath can crumble, so drill slowly and don't force it. Use a wood screw long enough to pass through the plaster and lath (typically 15–25mm) and still bite at least 30mm into the stud, so a 50–65mm screw is usual. Drive it in firmly but stop once the upright sits flat; overtightening can crack old lime plaster around the hole.

TS-06Fix into lath and plaster over solid masonryWhere the lath and plaster sits on battens over solid brick or block, drill through the plaster and lath first, then continue into the masonry with a masonry bit. Allow for the extra 15–25mm of plaster and lath in front of the brick, so use a longer screw and plug than you would on bare masonry — typically a 60–75mm screw with a matching 6mm or 7mm wall plug, drilled to at least 50mm depth into solid masonry. Push the plug in fully so it's not just gripping crumbly old plaster.

TS-07If your wall turns out to be plasterboard, not lath and plasterOn plasterboard over timber studs, use a wood screw straight into the centre of the stud, same as above. On plasterboard over metal studs, never use a plain wall plug or an ordinary wood screw — it strips straight through 0.5mm steel — use a self-drilling metal-stud fixing or a toggle-type hollow-wall anchor instead, and add a timber noggin or pattress between the studs if the shelving will take real weight or any pulling force. On dot-and-dab plasterboard, use a long fixing (typically 60–75mm) that passes through the board's air gap and bites into the masonry behind, not a short plasterboard-only fixing.

TS-08Fit the uprightsFix the top screw on each upright loosely first, then hang a spirit level down the front to check it's truly vertical before fixing the rest. Once both uprights are level with each other and plumb individually, drive in and tighten every screw fully. Give each upright a firm tug to check it doesn't move.
TS-09Fit the brackets and shelvesSlot the brackets into matching slot positions on each upright so the shelf sits level — count the slots rather than eyeballing the height. Lay the shelf on top and check it sits flat and doesn't rock. If your brackets have a locking clip or screw, secure it now.

TS-10Load test and tidy upAdd weight gradually rather than loading the shelf all at once, and check for any creak, dip or movement at the wall. Lath and plaster is weaker than solid masonry, so if you're planning a genuinely heavy load, it's worth fixing through to the masonry behind rather than relying on the lath alone. Vacuum up plaster dust and any bits of old lath, and wipe the wall down before you finish.
