Put up a twin-slot shelving system on a metal stud wall

Plan, mark and fix twin-slot shelving securely, checking your wall and cables before drilling.

TS-01Plan your layout and mark a level lineDecide where the shelving will go, checking it clears sockets, radiators and door swings. Mark the height for the top of your first upright, then use a spirit level to draw a true horizontal line — never trust your eye on this. Space uprights 600-900mm apart: closer spacing carries more weight, wider spacing suits light display shelves only.

TS-02Work out what's behind the wallRun a stud detector or magnet along the fixing line and mark where it changes from solid to hollow. Tap the wall: a dull thud usually means masonry or dot-and-dab, a hollow drum sound between firm points usually means a stud wall. Drill a small 3mm pilot hole at one point — fine timber dust means a timber stud, grey fibrous dust over a firm background means dot-and-dab, and bright metal swarf means a metal stud track. A soft, slightly springy wall with horizontal ridges under the plaster is likely lath and plaster.

TS-03Check for cables and pipes, and know your isolation pointsCables and pipes can run almost anywhere, not just in the usual safe zones, and a detector can miss deep cables, metal conduit, or anything behind metal-backed board. Sweep the fixing line with your detector, then still treat every point as live until you've proved otherwise. Find your stopcock, usually under the kitchen sink, and check it turns freely so you can shut off water fast if you hit a pipe. If you have any doubt at all, isolate the circuit at the consumer unit before drilling.
TS-04Choose the right fixing for your wall typeSolid brick or block: drill an 8mm hole 50mm deep, fit a red plastic wall plug, and drive in a 50mm screw. Plasterboard on timber studs: drill a 3mm pilot hole into the centre of the stud and drive in a 45mm wood screw — no plug needed. Plasterboard on metal studs: use a self-drilling metal-stud anchor or a toggle-type hollow-wall fixing rated for the load; never use a wood screw or a plastic plug, as they strip straight through 0.5mm steel. Dot-and-dab: use a fixing long enough to cross the air gap and bite into the masonry behind, typically 60-75mm, with a dot-and-dab fixing sleeve. Lath and plaster: fix into a timber lath or joist you've located; if there's no solid timber, fit a small noggin between the laths first rather than trusting the plaster alone.

TS-05Drill and fit the first uprightDrill your first hole at the marked point using the fixing method for your wall type. Insert the fixing and screw the upright loosely in place, then hold a spirit level against it to check it's dead vertical before tightening fully. Mark and drill the remaining holes through the upright's pre-punched slots, then tighten every screw.

TS-06Fix the second upright level with the firstMeasure and mark the second upright's position using the spacing you decided in Step 1. Lay a spirit level or straight edge across the tops of both uprights so they line up exactly, not just each one vertical on its own. Fix the second upright using the correct method for your wall type, checking it's plumb before tightening fully.

TS-07Fix any further uprights for a longer runRepeat the marking, drilling and fixing for each extra upright, keeping the spacing even and checking level across the whole run each time. On a metal stud wall, a single stud fixing only takes light loads — for full shelves of books or heavy items, fix through to a timber noggin fitted between the studs, or through to the masonry behind, rather than relying on the plasterboard alone.
TS-08Clip in the brackets at your chosen heightsDecide your shelf heights, then hook the twin-slot brackets into the matching slots on each upright — they should click firmly into place. Check the brackets sit at exactly the same height on every upright with a spirit level, since a few millimetres out will make a shelf visibly lean.

TS-09Fit the shelves and load-testLower each shelf onto its brackets and check it sits flat without rocking. Load it gradually, watching for flexing, brackets lifting, or the upright pulling away from the wall. If anything moves, stop, unload it, and fit a stronger fixing before loading again.

TS-10Tidy upVacuum up dust and swarf, especially metal filings from a metal stud wall, which can scratch flooring or work into feet. Wipe down the wall and shelving, and put spare fixings and tools away safely.
