Put up a twin-slot shelving system on a dot-and-dab plasterboard wall

Fit adjustable twin-slot shelving securely by finding what is behind your plasterboard and choosing the correct fixing for it.

TS-01Plan your shelving layoutDecide how wide each bay needs to be and mark the wall for the twin-slot uprights, typically 400-600mm apart depending on bracket length and load. Use a pencil and spirit level to draw a plumb line for each upright, then mark the top and bottom fixing points. Check the run for radiators, sockets or windows that might get in the way before you commit to positions.

TS-02Work out what's behind the board, and find hidden pipes and cablesRun a cable and pipe detector over every mark before you drill - but still treat each point as live and prove it isn't, because detectors miss deep cables, armoured cable, and anything behind metal-backed board. Find your stopcock now, usually under the kitchen sink, and check it turns, so you can shut the water off fast if you hit a pipe; if you're at all unsure, isolate the relevant circuit at the consumer unit first. Tap along each mark to check the wall type: dot-and-dab plasterboard sounds hollow with a slight give, solid brick or block sounds dense and solid, and a timber or metal stud wall drums evenly on lines roughly 400-600mm apart, which a magnet dragged down the wall will also pick out by catching on the fixing screws. Drill a small 3mm pilot hole at one mark - fine white dust with no resistance for 10-40mm before it goes solid means dot-and-dab, a shower of fine grey swarf means a metal stud, and gritty resistance the whole way through means timber.
TS-03Drill and fix the first upright into dot-and-dab plasterboardOn dot-and-dab, the board sits 10-40mm off the masonry on blobs of adhesive, so a plug in the board alone won't reach anything solid. Drill through the plasterboard and the dab void with a masonry bit sized for your fixing, using the depth you found in the pilot hole test, then continue into the brick or block behind by at least 30mm. Fix the upright with long frame fixings, typically 75mm x 7.5mm, driven through the board and void into the masonry, checking with a spirit level as you go so the track stays plumb. Never rely on the plasterboard skin alone to carry the weight of a loaded shelf.

TS-04Know the right fixing if your wall turns out to be something elseSolid brick or block: drill to the depth marked on the plug packet with the matching bit size, commonly 6mm for a light plug or 8mm for a heavier one, then fit the plug and drive in its matching screw. Timber stud: drive a 4x50mm wood screw straight into the centre of the stud, not into the plasterboard between studs. Metal stud: never use a plain plastic plug or an ordinary wood screw, as it strips straight through 0.5mm steel - use a self-drilling metal-stud fixing or a toggle-type hollow-wall anchor rated for the load, and if the shelving will be heavily loaded or pulled on, fit a timber noggin between the studs or fix through to the masonry behind instead. Lath and plaster: drill gently at low speed as the lath can crumble, then fix into the timber lath itself, use a long toggle fixing spanning the void, or add a noggin behind for a solid point.

TS-05Fix the second upright and check alignmentMark and drill the second upright using whichever method matched your wall type in the last two steps, keeping it plumb and level with the first track's slots so the brackets sit at matching heights. Check the gap between uprights against your bracket length before drilling so the brackets can span cleanly between them. Fix the top and bottom points first, check plumb again, then add the middle fixings.
TS-06Clip in the brackets and fit the shelvesSlot the brackets into the track at the height you want, using the same slot number on each upright so the shelves sit level. Rest the shelf boards on the brackets and check with a spirit level, adjusting the slot height if needed. If your kit needs it, secure the shelf to the bracket with the small fixing screws supplied for extra grip.

TS-07Load test before you trust itPress down firmly on each shelf and check the uprights for any flex or pulling away from the wall. Load the shelves gradually up to their intended weight, and check again after a few days once things have settled, especially on dot-and-dab where the dabs can compress slightly under load.
TS-08Tidy upVacuum plaster and masonry dust from drilling off the wall and floor. Bag up any spare fixings and packaging in case you need to add another bracket later. Put your tools away and give the room a final sweep.
