Replace a heated towel rail on a dot-and-dab plasterboard wall

Turn off the water, remove the old towel rail, then hang and reconnect a new one securely and leak-free.

HTR-01Gather your tools and protect the roomLay dust sheets under and around the towel rail. Get your tools together: adjustable spanner, radiator bleed key, drill, spirit level, detector, PTFE tape and a bucket with old towels to catch water. Check the fixing centres on your new towel rail against the old one, so you know if you need new holes.

HTR-02Turn off the water and drain the old railFind the two isolating valves at the base of the towel rail and turn them fully clockwise to shut off the flow. If there are none, turn off your central heating and let it cool, then drain the system at its drain-off point. Put a bucket under the connections, loosen one union nut with a spanner, and open the bleed valve at the top to help it drain. If the rail is electric or dual-fuel, switch off its isolator or turn off the relevant circuit at the consumer unit before touching any wiring.

HTR-03Remove the old towel railUndo the second union nut and lift the rail off its brackets, keeping it level so no more water spills. Empty any leftover water into the bucket. Unscrew the old wall brackets and set them aside; you may be able to reuse the same fixing holes if the new rail has matching spacing.
HTR-04Work out what's actually behind your plasterboardEven on a dot-and-dab wall, check what sits directly behind your fixing points, since bathroom walls sometimes mix masonry, timber battens and stud sections. Tap the wall: a dull thud means solid masonry is close behind, a hollow drum sound means plasterboard over an air gap or over a stud. Run a detector or strong magnet over the surface — repeated hits on screw heads in a line 300-600mm apart show a stud wall, and a magnetic pull means the studs are metal, not timber. Drill a small 2-3mm pilot hole in an unseen spot: pale timber dust means a wood stud or batten, grey metallic swarf means a metal stud, and a sudden change from soft board to hard resistance means solid masonry behind a dot-and-dab wall.

HTR-05Mark your fixing points and drill safelyBefore drilling anywhere, run your detector over the wall to check for cables and pipes — then still treat the wall as if something is there anyway, because detectors miss cables that are deep, in metal conduit, behind metal-backed board, or outside the usual safe zones, and a metal stud frame can confuse a cheap detector further. Find your stopcock, usually under the kitchen sink, and check it turns freely before you start, so you can shut the water off fast if you hit a pipe. If you have any doubt at all, isolate the relevant circuit at the consumer unit before drilling, and make sure the water is off at the stopcock too. Mark your fixing centres with a spirit level to match the new rail's brackets.

HTR-06Drill and fit the right fixing for your wallFor dot-and-dab, drill through the plasterboard and the air gap into the solid masonry behind — the fixing must be long enough to bridge this gap, typically 60-100mm overall, so use a long frame fixing or masonry screw with a plug rated for that depth. For solid brick or block with no dot-and-dab, drill an 8mm hole 50mm deep, insert a matching wall plug, and use a screw sized for it. For a timber stud, drive a wood screw into the centre of the stud itself, not just the board. For a metal stud, never use a plastic wall plug or ordinary wood screw — they strip straight through 0.5mm steel — use a self-drilling metal-stud fixing or a toggle-type hollow-wall anchor rated for the weight instead. For lath and plaster, find a timber lath with a pilot hole and screw into it, or fit a hollow-wall toggle rated for the plaster if you can't hit one. A heated towel rail is heavy and full of water, so if you only find plasterboard between studs with nothing solid behind, fit a timber noggin between the studs or fix through to the masonry behind before you hang it.

HTR-07Fit the wall brackets and hang the new towel railScrew the brackets into your prepared fixings, checking level as you go. Lift the new towel rail onto the brackets and check it sits securely without rocking. Give the fixings a firm push and pull before you rely on them — don't lean or hang anything on the rail yet.

HTR-08Reconnect the pipework and wire an electric element if fittedWrap PTFE tape clockwise around the pipe threads, then reconnect the union nuts by hand before finishing with a spanner — don't overtighten or you'll damage the olive. If your rail is dual-fuel or electric, wire the heating element following the manufacturer's instructions, using a fused connection unit or an existing isolator switch. Simply swapping a like-for-like element on an existing circuit doesn't usually need extra paperwork, but adding a new circuit or spur in a bathroom is notifiable work.

Electrical work in a bathroom (zones 1 and 2) is notifiable under Part P of the Building Regulations if it involves a new circuit — use a registered electrician or get it certified.

HTR-09Refill the system and bleed the towel railTurn the isolating valves back on slowly, or restart your central heating if you drained the system fully. Open the bleed valve at the top of the rail with your key until water flows steadily with no air, then close it. Check and top up your boiler's system pressure if it has dropped, following your boiler's own instructions.
HTR-10Check for leaks and tidy upRun the heating and check every joint and valve for drips, using a dry tissue to spot even small leaks. Let it run for 20-30 minutes, then check again once everything is hot, as fittings can loosen slightly as they warm up. Wipe up any water, remove your dust sheets, and dispose of the old towel rail responsibly — most local recycling centres take old radiators as scrap metal.
