Replace a heated towel rail on a metal stud wall

Drain, disconnect and rehang your heated towel rail safely, checking what's behind the wall before drilling any new fixings.

RT-01Gather your tools and protect the roomLay a dust sheet under the towel rail and along your route to the door. Get everything together before you start: adjustable spanner, PTFE tape, bleed key, screwdriver, drill, detector, spirit level, and old towels to mop up drips. Have a bucket ready to catch water from the old rail.

RT-02Isolate the towel rail from the heating systemFind the two valves at the bottom of the rail — usually a lockshield valve and a TRV or manual valve. Turn both fully clockwise to shut them off. If your rail has no isolation valves, you'll need to drain the whole heating system at the boiler instead, so check before you start.
RT-03Drain the old railPut the bucket under the bleed valve and open it with the bleed key to release pressure. Once the dripping slows, undo the two valve connections with an adjustable spanner, turning slowly and catching the water that runs out. Keep towels handy — there's always more water in the rail than you expect.
RT-04Take down the old railUnscrew the wall brackets and lift the rail clear. Before you throw anything away, measure the fixing centres — the spacing between the wall brackets — so you know whether your new rail matches or needs different hole positions.
RT-05Work out what the wall is made ofRun a detector up and down the wall where the new fixings will go. Track a magnet or the detector along a vertical line to find the screw heads holding the plasterboard — the spacing tells you if you're on a timber or metal stud. Metal studs sound the same as timber when tapped, so drill a small pilot hole in an offcut position: timber gives fine wood dust, metal gives shiny steel swarf. Metal stud walls are common in flats, new builds, and anything refitted since the 1990s — if your bathroom is in one of these, expect metal studs.
RT-06Choose the right fixing for your wallOn solid brick or block, drill an 8mm hole to 40mm depth and use a wall plug with a 50mm screw. On a timber stud, drive a wood screw into the centre of the stud. On dot-and-dab plasterboard, use a fixing long enough to pass through the board and adhesive dabs into the masonry behind — usually 60-75mm. On lath and plaster, use fine-threaded screws with a plaster washer to spread the load, and expect the plaster to be fragile. A heated towel rail full of water is heavy — a plain plasterboard toggle in a metal stud wall will NOT hold it and will pull straight through as you use it. You need a fixing into the centre of a metal stud with proper metal-stud screws, ideally backed by a timber noggin fitted between the studs, or you need to fix through to solid masonry behind. If there's no noggin and you can't get to solid backing, this job needs a joiner to fit one before you can safely hang the rail — don't skip this to finish in one go.

RT-07Mark and drill the new fixing holesCables and pipes can run almost anywhere behind a wall, not just in the marked safe zones — a metal stud frame can also confuse a cheap detector. Sweep the area with your detector, but still drill carefully and stop the moment you feel any resistance change or see anything other than dust or swarf coming out. Before you drill, find your stopcock — usually under the kitchen sink — and check it turns freely, so you can shut off the water fast if you hit a pipe. If you have any doubt at all, isolate the circuit at the consumer unit before drilling, and make sure the water is off at the stopcock before cutting into anything that could carry water.
RT-08Fit the wall bracketsPush in the fixings you chose in RT-06 and screw the brackets to the wall, checking they line up with the towel rail's bracket spacing. Tighten each screw fully but don't overtighten plasterboard fixings, or you'll strip the hole.
RT-09Hang the new rail and check it's levelLift the new towel rail onto the brackets. Check it's level with a spirit level before you tighten anything fully, and adjust the brackets slightly if it's out. A rail that's not level will drip from one end when you refill it.

RT-10Reconnect the plumbingWrap PTFE tape clockwise around the valve tails, then hand-tighten the connections before giving each a quarter turn with the spanner. Don't overtighten — this is a common cause of leaks, not too little force.
RT-11Refill, bleed and check for leaksOpen both valves slowly to let the system refill. Use the bleed key to release trapped air until water runs steadily from the bleed valve, then close it. Check both valve connections and the bleed valve for drips, and check again after 30 minutes and again the next day.
RT-12Tidy upWipe down the rail and wall, mop up any spilled water, and remove the dust sheet. Take the old towel rail to a household recycling centre — most scrap metal is collected free.
