Replace a heated towel rail on a timber stud wall

Swap your old heated towel rail for a new one safely, checking your wall type and isolating water before you drill or reconnect pipework.

TR-01Gather tools and protect the areaLay a dust sheet under the rail and old towels on the floor to catch drips. Get two adjustable spanners, PTFE tape, a radiator bleed key, a screwdriver, a drill, a detector and a spirit level ready. Check you have the new towel rail, its brackets and the correct wall fixings for your wall type before you start.

TR-02Work out what your wall is made ofTap the wall. A dull, solid sound usually means brick or block. A hollow sound with an even line of screw heads under plaster suggests plasterboard on timber or metal studs, roughly 400-600mm apart. Run a detector across the wall, then drill a small 2mm test hole: pale wood dust means a timber stud, fine grey swarf means metal, and a slight bounce with an older, uneven surface often means lath and plaster. Dot-and-dab plasterboard sounds hollow everywhere, with no studs behind it, just blobs of adhesive fixing it to solid masonry.
TR-03Isolate the heating to the towel railFind the two valves at the bottom of the rail, usually a lockshield valve and a thermostatic or manual valve. Turn both fully off, noting how many turns the lockshield took so you can reset it later. If your rail has no isolating valves, you will need to drain the whole heating system from the lowest radiator, or fit a pipe-freezing kit to isolate just this pipe run.

TR-04Drain and disconnect the old railPut the bowl and towels under the union nuts connecting the rail to the valves. Open the bleed valve at the top of the rail with the bleed key to let air in and help it drain. Undo the union nuts with two spanners, holding the valve steady with one and turning the nut with the other, then lift the rail off its brackets.
TR-05Remove the old bracketsUnscrew the old wall brackets. If the new rail uses different fixing centres, fill the old holes with a small amount of filler and let it dry. Check the wall surface behind is sound before marking up new positions.

TR-06Mark up the new bracket positionsHold the new brackets or template against the wall and use a spirit level to get the fixing holes level and at the right height. Mark each hole centre with a pencil. If you found a timber stud earlier, try to line at least one bracket up with its centre.
TR-07Drill and fit the wall bracketsCables and pipes can run almost anywhere in a wall. Sweep the area with a detector, but still treat every mark as if something is behind it. Find your stopcock, usually under the kitchen sink, and check it turns before you drill. If you have any doubt at all, isolate the electrics at the consumer unit first, and make sure the water is off at the stopcock if you are drilling anywhere near pipework. Into a timber stud, drill a 3mm pilot hole in the stud centre and drive in a wood screw at least 40mm long. Into a metal stud, use a self-drilling metal-stud fixing or a toggle-type hollow-wall anchor rated for the weight — never a plain plastic plug or an ordinary wood screw, both strip straight through 0.5mm steel. A metal stud alone will not hold a full towel rail safely if anything pulls or leans on it; if you have any doubt, fix into a timber noggin between the studs or through to solid masonry behind. Into solid brick or block, drill a 6mm hole 40-50mm deep and fit a wall plug sized to your screw. Through dot-and-dab plasterboard, use a fixing long enough (60-75mm) to pass through the board and adhesive dabs into the masonry behind. Into lath and plaster, drill slowly to avoid cracking the plaster and fix into a lath or noggin with an appropriate toggle fixing.

TR-08Hang and level the new railLift the towel rail onto the fitted brackets. Check it sits level with a spirit level and adjust the bracket grub screws if the rail has them. Give it a gentle shake to check it feels secure before connecting the pipework.
TR-09Reconnect the valvesWrap PTFE tape clockwise around each threaded connection, three or four turns. Hand-tighten the union nuts onto the valves, then nip them up with two spanners as before, holding the valve steady. Do not overtighten, as this can crack the fitting.

TR-10If your rail is dual-fuel, connect the electric elementSome towel rails have a separate electric heating element as well as the plumbed connection. If this means adding new fixed wiring in a bathroom, this is notifiable work under Part P of the Building Regulations, because bathrooms are special locations under the wiring regulations (BS 7671). Have this checked or carried out by a registered electrician, or have the work checked by Building Control.

New fixed electrical work in a bathroom is notifiable under Part P of the Building Regulations and must meet BS 7671 zone rules.

TR-11Refill the system and bleed the railReopen the valves slowly, turning the lockshield back to the number of turns you noted earlier. Hold the bleed key ready and close the bleed valve as soon as water appears steadily, with no air spitting out. Check your boiler pressure gauge and top up the system if it has dropped below the normal range shown in its manual.
TR-12Check for leaks and test the heatDry all the joints with a towel, then check them again after 10-15 minutes for any damp patches. Turn the heating on and confirm the rail warms up evenly along its full length. Fix any leaking joint by draining that connection, redoing the PTFE tape, and retightening.
TR-13Tidy up and dispose of the old railWipe down the wall and floor, and remove the dust sheet and towels. Take the old towel rail to a household waste recycling centre for metal recycling rather than putting it in general rubbish.
