Using a detector before you drill

Learn to use a cable and pipe detector properly, and why it lowers risk but never guarantees a wall is safe to drill.

UD-01Know what the detector can and can't findA detector (sometimes called a stud finder or multi-scanner) usually senses three things: metal, live AC electric cables, and sometimes changes in density that suggest a pipe or timber stud. It cannot see through everything equally well. Plastic pipes, cables buried deep, cables in metal conduit, and anything behind metal-backed plasterboard can be missed completely. The beginner mistake is treating a clear reading as proof there's nothing there, when it only means the detector found nothing it's capable of finding.
UD-02Fit fresh batteries and pick the right modeWeak batteries make detectors give false or patchy readings, so fit new ones before you start. Most detectors have separate modes for metal, AC live wires, and deep scanning (usually a button or dial marked with symbols) - select all of them in turn rather than assuming one mode covers everything. Read the small instruction leaflet once; every model beeps or lights up slightly differently.

UD-03Test the detector on something you already know is thereBefore trusting it on your wall, run the detector over a socket or light switch you know is live, or a radiator pipe you can see enter the wall. You should get a clear signal - beeping, a light, or a needle movement, depending on your model. If it stays silent over something you know is there, the detector is faulty, badly calibrated, or you're using the wrong mode. Don't scan the actual work area until this test passes.
UD-04Scan the area slowly in an overlapping gridHold the detector flat against the wall and move it slowly - rushing is the single most common reason people miss a signal. Sweep in horizontal lines about 100mm apart, then go over the same area again in vertical lines, so you cover it twice from different directions. Cables and pipes usually run straight up/down or side to side from sockets, switches and taps, so pay extra attention to a line drawn from those fittings.
UD-05Mark every signal, even faint onesWhenever the detector reacts, mark the spot lightly on the wall with a pencil or a strip of masking tape, and mark both edges of the signal, not just the middle. Faint or intermittent signals still count - do not dismiss them as 'probably nothing'. Once you've scanned the whole area, look at the marks together; a pattern running in a straight line usually confirms a real cable or pipe run rather than a false alarm.

UD-06If there's any doubt, isolate before you drillA detector reduces risk, it does not remove it. It can miss cables that run deep, sit in metal conduit, hide behind metal-backed plasterboard, or simply don't follow the 'safe zones' that modern wiring is supposed to keep to - older or amateur wiring often ignores those zones altogether. Treat every wall as if something is behind it until you've proved otherwise. If you have any doubt at all, turn off the relevant circuit at the consumer unit (the fuse box) before drilling, and turn the water off at the stopcock before cutting into anything that could carry water.
UD-07Check you've read it right before committingCross-check your marked signals against what you'd logically expect - cables often run vertically from a socket, pipes often run to a tap or radiator. If the pattern makes sense and matches a second detector pass, you can be more confident. As a final check when drilling, go slowly for the first 10-15mm, watch for a colour change in the drill dust (copper dust or damp patches mean stop immediately), and never drill deeper than you need to.
