Fit a grab rail by the bath or toilet to a metal stud wall

Fit a grab rail safely into a metal stud bathroom wall by adding a timber noggin for a fixing strong enough to trust with body weight.

AB-01Plan the position and buy the right railDecide where the rail is needed - usually beside the bath edge or next to the toilet, roughly 800-1000mm above the floor, adjusted to suit the person using it. Buy a grab rail tested to BS 8300 with a stated weight rating, not a decorative towel rail. Hold it in place and pencil-mark the fixing hole centres on the wall.

AB-02Find your stopcock and check it before you startFind your stopcock, usually under the kitchen sink, and check it turns freely. If you hit a pipe while cutting or drilling, you need to shut the water off fast. Also check which circuit at the consumer unit covers this bathroom, so you can isolate power if you're at all unsure what's behind the wall.
AB-03Work out what your wall is made ofTap the wall across a wide area. A dull, hollow sound everywhere with occasional solid thuds usually means dot-and-dab plasterboard over masonry. A consistently hollow sound with a line of screw heads every 400-600mm found by magnet or detector is stud plasterboard. Drill a small pilot hole on the screw line: pale wood dust means timber studs, fine grey swarf means metal studs. A solid, dense sound with no give at all is solid brick or block. An older wall with slight give and thin timber strips visible if you drill through is lath and plaster.

AB-04Choose the right fixing approach for your wall typeOn solid brick or block, use a 6mm masonry bit, drill to 50mm and fit a screw-in plug rated for the rail's weight. On a timber stud wall, drive coach screws straight into the centre of two studs. On dot-and-dab, use fixings at least 80-100mm long so they pass through the board and adhesive void into the masonry behind. On a metal stud wall, plain toggles or plasterboard anchors are not strong enough on their own for a grab rail - a rail takes full body weight and sudden pulling force, so you need a solid timber backing fitted first (next step). On lath and plaster, fix through to a stud or the masonry behind, never into the thin lath strips alone.
AB-05For metal stud walls: cut in and fit a timber nogginConfirm the exact position of the two nearest metal studs with your detector. Cut a hole roughly 300mm x 150mm in the plasterboard between them using a plasterboard saw. Screw a 47x100mm timber noggin flat between the studs using 40mm self-drilling metal-stud screws, so its face sits flush with the front edge of the studs. This gives you solid timber to screw the rail into.

AB-06Patch the wall and let it dryCut a plasterboard patch or 12mm ply pattress to fit the hole and screw it to the studs and the new noggin with 40mm drywall screws. Tape the joints and fill with joint filler. Leave to dry fully before drilling into it - usually overnight.

AB-07Detect and drill pilot holes safelyCables and pipes can run almost anywhere, not just in the 'safe zones'. Run your detector over the marked fixing points, but still assume something could be there and prove otherwise - detectors miss deep cables, cables in metal conduit, and anything behind metal-backed board. If there's any doubt, isolate the bathroom circuit at the consumer unit before drilling, and make sure the stopcock is off before cutting into anything that could carry water. Drill through tiles at low speed with a tile-and-masonry bit to stop them cracking, then switch to a wood bit once through the tile to drill into the noggin.

AB-08Fix the rail to the wallHold the rail against the wall over the noggin and check it's level. Drive coach screws or heavy-duty wood screws through each baseplate into the timber noggin, at least 30-40mm into solid wood. Use at least two fixings per baseplate.

AB-09Test the rail before anyone uses itPull hard on the rail in several directions, including downwards and outwards as if losing balance. Check both baseplates for any movement or flexing in the wall. If anything moves, stop and add more fixings into the noggin before it's used.
AB-10Seal the fixings and tidy upRun a bead of sanitary silicone sealant around the edge of each baseplate to stop water getting behind it and rotting the timber. Smooth with a wet finger and leave to cure per the tube's instructions, usually 24 hours, before use. Vacuum up dust and offcuts, wipe down surfaces, and put tools away.
