Fit a grab rail by the bath or toilet to a solid brick or block wall

Fit a weight-bearing grab rail safely, with the right fixing for solid masonry, stud walls, dot-and-dab or lath and plaster.

GB-01Work out what your bathroom wall is made ofTap the wall. A dull, solid sound all over means brick or block. A hollow sound that changes as you move along, with a line of screw heads or a stud finder pinging every 400-600mm, means a stud wall behind plasterboard. If it sounds part-hollow, part-solid with no regular stud pattern, it's likely dot-and-dab plasterboard stuck to masonry with adhesive blobs. Old houses (pre-1930s) with a bouncy, springy sound often have lath and plaster - thin wood strips under crumbly plaster.

GB-02Check the wall can actually take a grab railA grab rail takes full body weight plus a hard, sudden pull - it needs a genuinely solid fixing. Solid brick or block is the best case. A stud wall on its own is not strong enough: you need a timber noggin fitted between the studs, or fixings that go right through to the masonry behind. Dot-and-dab has an air gap behind the plasterboard, so fixings must be long enough to cross that gap and bite into the masonry. Lath and plaster is too crumbly to trust alone - fix into the masonry or joist behind it, or fit a plywood pattress first. If you're not confident the wall behind can take the load, get a builder to open it up and add a noggin before you fit anything.
GB-03Gather your tools and the right fixingsBuy the grab rail first, then match fixings to your wall type. For solid brick or block: masonry drill bit and heavy-duty wall plugs or resin anchors. For a timber stud with a noggin: coach screws or heavy wood screws into the centre of the timber. For a metal stud: never use a plain plug or wood screw - it strips straight through 0.5mm steel. Use a metal-stud toggle fixing, or fix through to a timber noggin or the masonry behind instead. For dot-and-dab: long fixings that pass through the plasterboard and adhesive dabs into the solid masonry.

GB-04Mark the position and check it's levelHold the rail where you want it - usually a comfortable reach from the bath or toilet, following the manufacturer's fixing guide for height. Mark the screw holes with a pencil and check the rail is level using a spirit level. Double-check the position works for the person using it before you drill anything.

GB-05Check for hidden pipes and cables before you drillCables and pipes can run almost anywhere in a wall, not just in the 'safe zones' you might expect - and a metal stud frame confuses cheap detectors even further. Run your detector over the whole area, but still assume something could be there even after checking. Find your stopcock now, usually under the kitchen sink, and make sure it turns freely, so you can shut the water off fast if you hit a pipe. If you have any doubt at all, isolate the relevant circuit at the consumer unit before drilling, and know where the stopcock is before you cut into anything near a bath, basin or toilet supply.
GB-06Drill the fixing holes - method depends on your wallSolid brick or block: drill straight, to the depth stated on your wall plug packet, and clear dust from the hole. Timber stud with a noggin: drill a pilot hole into the centre of the noggin. Metal stud: drill a small pilot hole first - fine steel swarf confirms metal - then use the pilot size stated for your metal-stud toggle fixing. Dot-and-dab: drill through the plasterboard and adhesive dab in one go, checking your drill bit is long enough to reach solid masonry behind. Lath and plaster: drill gently through the plaster and lath, expect it to be crumbly, and aim for the masonry or joist behind.

GB-07Fit the correct wall fixingsPush wall plugs fully into masonry holes so they sit flush. For a metal stud fixing, insert the self-drilling or toggle-type anchor as directed on the packet - it locks against the back of the steel once tightened. For dot-and-dab, make sure the fixing is seated against solid masonry, not just gripping the plasterboard face. For lath and plaster, if the hole crumbles badly, fit the plywood pattress over the area first, screwed into the masonry or joist, then fix the rail to the pattress.
GB-08Screw the rail to the wallLine the rail up on your marks and screw it in through each fixing point, tightening evenly so it doesn't rock. Do not overtighten plastic wall plugs, as this can crack them and weaken the grip. Check the rail is still level once fully fixed.

GB-09Pull-test the rail before anyone relies on itPut your full body weight on the rail, pulling hard in the direction it will actually be used - downward and outward, not just pressing in. If it moves, flexes, or you hear cracking from the wall, stop using it immediately and refit into solid masonry or a proper noggin. Only sign it off as safe once it holds firm under real pressure.
GB-10Seal the edges and tidy upRun a thin bead of bathroom silicone sealant around the base plate of the rail where it meets a tiled or wet wall, to stop water getting in behind it. Wipe away dust, vacuum up drill debris, and dispose of any offcuts. Leave sealant to cure for the time stated on the tube before the rail gets wet.
